Dialed for park riding   11-07-05

These skis are made and priced for riding in the park. They have a really soft flex so they're forgiving when you're trying to land a little off balance coming off a rail. The swing weight is low too, so they're easy to spin coming off a jump. I rounded the edges beneath my feet with a file so they don't carve well, but I've never caught an edge on a rail. The best thing about these skis is the low price, you don't feel bad about trashing them since they're so cheap.

Lange Comp 100 Alpine Ski Boot - Men's    This product is no longer available

awesome, if you have the right foot   10-03-05

These boots are perfect for skiing soft snow or even riding in the park. They have a pretty soft forward flex making it easy to get into the front of the boots when you're skiing pow or blasting through the chop. They work okay for park riding too since they're forgiving on landings. They fit better than Langes used to, but you really need to have a pretty narrow foot. These have a super narrow heel pocket, and a pretty narrow forefoot. I have an average-width foot, and had to get my boots ground out on the sides so they wouldn't fall asleep. Try Salomon if you have wide feet.

powder monster   10-12-05

This ski is awesome. It's really lightweight so it doesn't take a lot to muscle it around in heavy snow, and it's effortless in light snow. I like it a lot more than the Rossi Scratch BC, or Volkl Gotama as a designated powder ski. It's just more fun to ski since turning is so easy, and you get the same float since the footprint is so huge. I'm about 6'2" 185lb and the first time I skied it through pow I hauled ass. You sit up so high in the snow that you carry way more speed than you do on shorter skinnier skis. You can also carve turns with this thing once you get on the trail back to the lift. It's really fun to lay it down and carve long GS turns with these planks because they're fat but still really stable.

ski judge judy style   10-12-05

I got a chance to ski the Verdicts for a day and thought they were pretty sick through the pow. They're super light so you can pop quick turns effortlessly. I skied the 190cm (I'm 185lb, 6'2") and they were a good length off trail. In the resort they didn't ski all that well. I would turn them over and really try to get on top of the edge, but they would just wash out. If you want a fat ski to ride every day I wouldn't get this one, it's really only good as a touring for turns ski. But if this is a quiver ski and you want to ride only powder, it's killer.

Who needs Bam?   12-19-05

These shades are exactly like the Electric BSGs only with a less chunky frame. They don't have the space cut out in the middle of your forehead and the frames are lower profile. I have a big head (7 5/8) and these things fit great. I tried the big, circular frames but I have a more square face so these look better.

Rossignol Scratch BC Alpine Ski    This product is no longer available

the rossignol gotoma   08-02-05

This is what Rossignol made to go after the crowd that buys the Volkl Gotama. That said it's a sick deep-snow ski. It doesn't look as fat as it really is out of the box because the angled sidewalls make it look skinnier from the top. It's pretty easy to turn, and you can actually get on top of it and it hooks up on groomed runs. It's a lot fatter than the 04/05 BC, but it also has a stiffer tip and tail. It's a fun ski for heavier snow, and it is super fun to ski through powder that's already been cut by a few people.

light ski for the light snow   10-04-05

This is a super sick ski for rocking through mountains of powder. I skied them twice last year and I liked them way more than the Volkl Gotamas. Their swing weight is lower and the flex is a little softer. It's easier to turn the Pimps in powder with the soft flex and when you hit the groomer back to the lift it's easy to just roll over on the side and carve lazy turns when you're exhausted.

Planet Earth Arctic Jacket - Men's    Read other reviews of this product

great for most conditons   10-12-05

The Arctic Jacket is dialed for riding on most days. If it's snowing really hard, it's not waterproof enough to keep you dry, and if it's sunny and mild you'll sweat to death. The jacket is pretty heavy which is what you'd expect from an insulated jacket made for riding the resort. I wear a size medium in most Planet Earth and Volcom shirts, but a large in most jackets. I got this in a medium and it fits perfectly. The arm length is good and the wrist gaiters are the ideal length even though I'm 6'2" and have really long arms. The pitzips are dialed—you just wear a base layer under the jacket and when you start getting warm you open them up and cool off immediately, pit zips don't work that well if you’re layering clothes instead or wearing an insulated jacket.

Dynastar Legend 8800 Ski    This product is no longer available

big mountain fun   08-02-05

I skied these rigs three times last year and dug it more each day I was on it. It's a fat ski, but not quite as big as the Rossi B4; and it's soft, but not quite as soft as the K2 Seth Vicious. Dynastar has built a ski that does absolutely everything pretty well, but nothing perfectly. The 89mm underfoot will float you pretty well, and the soft-flexing tip will almost always stay above the snow too. You can carve long turns easily, and it's stable at speed and blasting through chop too. Really, it's the perfect one ski quiver for people who ride places like Jackson Hole and Snowbird. Of course, if you can afford a dedicated powder ski, and a mid-fat, that's probably the way to go.

Rossignol Bandit B3 Alpine Ski    Read other reviews of this product

ugh, Rossignol is a bunch of idiots   08-17-05

In the interest of confusing all of their customers, Rossignol made a ski that’s a mix of the B2 and B3 from last year, and called it the B3. The new B3 is a pretty good ski if you ski a handful of times each year and you only want one ski. It carves turns nicely on groomers, and it's easy to get the ski to hook up. Off trail the B3 is kind of a disappointment. It just doesn’t have the stability and float you want out of an off-piste ski. If you only get one ski this year and you really charge, go for the Dynastar 8800. If you're looking for a ski that's a lot of fun on-trial, take the B3.

The North Face Apex Valkyrie Jacket - Men's    This product is no longer available

aerobic jacket   01-03-06

This jacket is great for running when it's cold and snowy or raining. I bought it to wear for skiing on mild days but it doesn’t work well for that at all. The inside of the jacket has a fleece lining that binds whenever you try to layer something heavier than a baselayer under the jacket. The arms are really narrow and the cuffs are super small, I can't even fit a glove under them. The neck is also really tight, I can't layer underneath with anything but crew necks. If you're looking for a jacket that works well for aerobic sports then this is great, if you want to use if for skiing or colder weather, get something else.

pop and lock dude, pop and lock   07-11-05

This jacket belongs on the street corner with a boom box and a piece of cardboard with you busting moves. Which might explain why it's so tight. I wear a size medium in Planet Earth shirts, but needed a large in this. It's snug, and the fabric is thin but very dense. It almost feels like a wetsuit. It wears well and moves easily. I wear the brown one with jeans all the time, but can't wear it with khaki pants; I'd look like a ninja wearing all brown.

I don't really skate all that aggressivly   12-19-05

I got these kicks about a month ago and I really like them. You can run the laces on the inside of the shoe, so they don't get torn up while skating. Once you do that the laces are about three feet too long so I ended up cutting them down a little so I don't look like a clown with four bows on my shoes. I don't skate a ton, but these have been helpful learning to ollie when I'm actually moving instead of just standing still on the carpet. I usually wear an 11.5, and these fit true to size. They felt tight at first but once laced they were solid.

nobody knows   08-17-05

I think these are chick's shades, but I'm probably wrong. Regardless they have a badass look and good coverage. I wouldn't wear them for any sports, but they're great for hanging out in friend's backyards looking like I'm in a sunglasses ad. In spite of having large lens, the frames of these glasses are not super big. I have a pretty big head, about 7 5/8 hat size, okay--it's enormous. But the point isn't my freakishly sized head; the point is these glasses really aren’t too wide. So if you have a really big head these things will still crush your temples.

wicked rad   03-09-06

I got these shoes about a week ago and they're off the sickter scale. They're super airy so they're really cool, even if you're skating in them for a couple hours. They have a really low profile so you feel really close to your board. They're pretty durable, but I don't plan on skating in them too much. I got them to mostly just wear around and I like the casual look, they're definitely cooler looking than most plain jane skate shoes. Siiick style. I usually wear and 11.5 and my size fit great.

Heavy but nice   05-26-05

If the toughest part of your day is getting your gear on, these skis are not for you. They're shockingly heavy. I made my friends lift them because I couldn't believe how heavy they were. Once we got to the mountain they skied like a dream. They like to be on edge and are best for people who like carving long GS turns. I hiked for about 20 minutes with them to get to some good snow and I had to switch arms several times. You seriously won't believe how heavy these things are. But, once again, when I got them on and shook out my arms the descent was perfect. Most of the weight is in the binding so they have a pretty low swing weight. They'll pop quick turns with some work and punch through the afternoon chop.

don't get caught   06-26-06

I bought these a few months ago, and they work really well. They darken the moment you head outside, you just squint for a moment before you recover. They fit me well and I have a really big head (7 5/8 hat size). They sit close to your eye. The only thing I don't like about them is that they never get dark enough to hide my eyes. The first day I wore them, I got really dirty looks from a few girls. I'm used to being able to stare when I'm wearing sunglasses. At least if one of their boyfriends punches me in the face, the impact-resistant lenses and lightweight grilamid frame won't break.

Volcom Hot Snake Short Sleeve Shirt - Men's    Read other reviews of this product

my girlfriend calls me "hot snake"   07-11-05

Dude, this shirt is not-so-sweet. It's a really weird fabric, which isn't reflected in the picture. The fabric picks up tons of lint, and it wrinkles all the time. Which would look good if it were normal cotton or linen, but instead it always looks like you slept in a bowling alley. A button also broke off the second time I wore it. Some lady at Wal Mart pointed it out to me and I had to tell her I left it like that so I could scratch my belly button. Plus, I kind of felt like a poser wearing a Volcom shirt to Wal Mart. But I gave it a three because it has a good, slim fit. The collar also looks pretty cool if you iron it. Almost respectable.

This is a heavy sweatshirt and it's way warm. I had hoped that it had a slim fit, but it's super baggy. The interior is also lined with white and black prison stripes which is hard to tell in the picture. I liked the way it looked but the arms weren’t long enough and the body was too big.

siiick carver   04-20-05

This ski is a quiver ski in the west and a do-it-all ride for the Midwest. It skis more like a carving ski than a mid fat and has great edge hold, even if you get a little lazy and sit in the back seat. It doesn't have the width to float powder and it's tough to keep the tips up in the chowder - they're just too narrow and stiff. Overall, a solid ski for most people, don't be scared by the 185cm length, they're sick.

planet plaid   07-11-05

This shirt is so sick, it's like the time my friend Peter's cat threw up, then ate its own vomit, then threw up again. That's how sick it is. The cotton fabric is really light, and it keeps me nice and cool here in the god forsaken desert. I'm from the Midwest, so I'm used to lakes and green hills. This shirt takes me back to planet plaid, where people still appreciate comfortable shirts that look as good as this one. As a bonus, it never really wrinkles and always looks like it's been ironed. I haven't been able to figure this out, but, when I do, I plan to patent it, and become a millionaire.

These shorts fit true to size. I was a little surprised when they arrived at my house, the color is pretty faded. I thought it would be darker, but it's actually pretty light. The button also broke off on them, so I had to sew on a new one. I'm no seamstress, so I picked a button that's too big. Since I'm too lazy to cut it off, I just don't wear these shorts anymore.

The stripes on this shirt look wider when the shirt's in front of you than they do on the site. They still look pretty cool, but they're really eye catching. I don't think anyone would mistake this shirt for something you would find in a thrift store. Also, the stripes on the back near the top run diagonally, not horizontally like the front of the shirt. The shirt has a normal fit. I usually wear a medium and it was a perfect fit.

Plain jane   12-19-05

This is a plain shirt with a normal fit. I had one of Volcom's Hot Snake shirts and this is way, way better. The cotton this thing is made of actually breathes and I haven't lost any buttons off this shirt like I did off the Hot Snake. The back of the shirt has a long seam but it doesn't look awkward or anything. All of these are treated with a vintige wash too, so they have a faded look.

These are wide goggles; they fit me well since I have a big head (7 5/8) and they offer great peripheral vision. They're not quite as nice as lower-profile goggles when trying to look down, meaning you have to tilt your head to look straight down when you're trying to see if you're locked into your skis or board. They ventilate well and it's easy to swap the lenses.

The Montrail Masais do it all. They're almost as light as road running shoes and have enough lateral stability and traction to take off-road too. They're also super vented so your feet won't get too sweaty. Before I got these I was running in TNF Ultra XCRs. It was like I had plastic bags on my feet. The inegra fit from Montrail really works too. I have pretty average fit and they felt wonderful right out of the box.

It sounds kind of hokey but it's the best turns I've had this year—and I live in Utah.

This shirt is not exactly as it seems. I usually wear a medium in Planet Earth gear, but had to get a size large in this, which is still pretty tight. It's also way, way longer than the pic makes it look. It comes down past your ass so you have to tuck it in, or look like you're wearing a jail-striped unitard. But if you like long shirts, then this is pretty solid. The fabric is a pretty heavy weave, and the collar actually stands up and looks good. Also, Peter Barrett has a siiiiick new house, I heard.

This is like a little bar you can bring anywhere. On a canoe trip we loaded each Platypus with a different kind of alcohol, and even put freeze-dried mixers in the pouch. (We also reserved one Platypus for syrup for pancakes) Whenever I go to a basketball or baseball game I always fill one of the Platypus's with whiskey and put it in my pocket. At a college game, I even got a pat down, but the security guard felt it and didn't even notice. Sick. Then I just had to buy a large Coke and I was well on my way to a killer game.

I've used them in my TNF Gore-Tex trail runners and they wick sweat even though Gore-Tex can't keep up and breathe fast enough. During fall, or when the weather's rainy, they keep my feet at the perfect temp. I use them in my Montrail Masais during summer and they're perfect. My feet stay cool in all but super, super hot weather. But I usually just sit in front of my TV drinking cheap beer when it's super hot, so it doesn't really bother me.

Ugh, look for the real ones   12-19-06

I tried some of these out and they were a huge disappointment. I'm not saying I expected to feel like I was walking on water, but they really didn't help with my footing at all. I was on snow a couple feet deep and they would punch through the top crust and then sit in the snow awkwardly. These things just kind of twist around in the snow. My parents' have a set of Atlas snowshoes with metal frames. They offer better footing than the MSR ones.
