Salomon Escape 9 Boot   03-24-05

I've been using the Escape 9 boots around my home stomping grounds and have really enjoying them. This boot is buttery comfortable (especially compared to the Salomon backcountry boots)! The zip-up cover does a good job of keeping the white stuff out down lower, but the top of the boot is rather exposed, especially the tongue... it sits big at the top... kind of asks for a gaiter over the top, but Salomon didn't both to put a gaiter hook up front on these boots. But, then again, on groomed trails, the snow isn't really deep enough that it matters (in then end, everything has remained dry - no snow ingress). Overall, I am very happy with these boots, and would buy them again.

Patagonia Core Skin Jacket - Mens    This product is no longer available

Patagonia Core Skin Jacket   03-10-05

Very satisfied with this jacket. I used it doing all the cross-country ski trails in the Porcupine Mountains in Michigan's UP in January, where it was 15 deg, with just a base layer, and was very comfortable. The 4-way stretch PowerShield is wonderful, and sheds snow like it were air. The jacket was too warm (while being active) for a subsequent backcountry snowshoe trip where the temps were in the mid 30s. Fine as an outer or midlayer at camp though when the evening temps were in the upper 20s. Doesn't add much warmth when at camp and the temps hit below 0, though (need a down jacket for that). The fit is the best of all the soft-shells I tried (e.g. TNF, Mtn Hdwr, ArcTeryx, Marmot, etc.). The adjustable cuffs can be a nice feature, but can also be a nuisance... an elastic cuff would be less fuss.
