Good lightweight option, great price

I bought the 2001 model of this bag from BackcountryStore.com a couple of years ago, and it's seen a lot of use in the last two summers for backpacking and car camping. The good: it's a big bag, very comfortable for big guys. Mine weighs 28 ounces with the stuff sack, and it's very compact when stuffed. The temp rating is reasonable -- I have been fine down around 40 degrees F wearing clothes and with a pad. But 45-50 is a better low range to shoot for. The price is terrific. The bad: the chambers are underfilled, so it gets large flat spots where there is no down at all. You can fluff it up, but they come back. It's a big bag, so you have to warm it up in cooler weather. I'm not a big fan of the 1/2 zipper -- I'd like to be able to open it all the way and use it as a comforter in a hammock or under a tarp. Laid out next to my wife's Mountain Hardware Phantom, which is rated to 35 degrees and costs twice as much (and weighs a half pound *less*), this bag looks pretty anemic. But it's a good, solid lightweight down bag for summer hiking, and it won't make a huge dent in your wallet. |
