Good quality and stylish... too stylish?

I hadn't intended to buy the Marmot Wasatch. I had been planning to hold out for an Arc'teryx Alpha LT. But the Wasatch came up on SAC, the deal was hard to beat, and the features seemed similar. I bought the jacket. When it arrived I was initially quite pleased. It is definitely well-made and very light. It looks nice on, too. As other reviewers have remarked, it has a pleasing feminine cut, narrow in the waist and flared at the hips. Unfortunately, while this stylish shape places the jacket high on the fashion scale, it does not fare as well when it comes to function. I found it difficult to layer under this jacket without feeling cinched in the middle. I therefore concluded that the Wasatch was not the jacket I was seeking to fulfill my mountaineering needs. Sizing up wouldn't have solved the problem as the shoulders would have then been too wide. (I'm 5'7", 135 lbs, more pear than apple, and tried the medium.) I returned the jacket. In summary: quality product and feminine styling, just not what I was looking for. |

Bermuda Blue is my new favorite color

I'm a little embarrassed to be so enamored with an inanimate object, but, what the heck: I am head-over-heels for my Stingray jacket in Bermuda Blue. This is, in my opinion, the nicest looking ski jacket I've ever seen. The color is really vibrant, more so in person than on the computer screen. In fact, you'll be so recognizable on the slope that you may think twice about jumping out of bounds. Of course, beauty is not only skin deep with this jacket. The fabric has a very nice feel and excellent water resistance, the hood fits over my helmet with just the right snugness, the collar is high enough to keep my chin warm while hunkering down on the lift, the pit zips are functional while wearing gloves, and the pockets are accessible with my backpack on. The relaxed fit might not be very Euro, but I appreciate having plenty of room to layer, and that wouldn't really be my style anyway. Despite my rave review, there is *no way* I would buy this at full price (for budgetary reasons). Extend that radar for awesome sales on SAC and backcountry.com and you will be generously rewarded for your diligence. |
