Pretty nice

I take this me on just about all of my outdoors trips. Many people will point out that the altimeter needs to be semi frequently calibrated, but for what I use it for, I don't consider this a problem. In my opinion its greatest use is locating yourself on a long trail that has few features which will help you determine where exactly you are. There are plenty of trails which run for many miles without any prominent landscape features or intersections which makes it difficult for you to judge your pace. With the additional data points of direction (compass) and altitude, you can usually accurately place yourself within a couple hundred feet as long as you know which trail you're on. Having to recalibrate the thing a few times per day is not a problem IMO, since you should frequently be cross checking your map, compass, and altimeter anyway if you are in unfamiliar terrain. Additionally the alarm clock is a nice feature. The one gripe I have with it is that sometimes the compass is slow to react to abrupt changes in orientation. Also the leveling bubble occasionally freezes. Otherwise I find it to be a useful bit of gear for any outdoorsman. |
