The Best Scout Pack Period.
11-06-08 ![]() |
These packs rock. We took four of them up to Red Castle lake with a group of Boy Scouts. The pack will fit just about any boy, and is fairly easy to adjust on the trail. We had one boy with a 28" waist and one boy with a 38" waist in these packs, and we were able to get them adjusted for each. Straps have multiple attachment points to adjust for narrower shoulders and different torso lengths. The top flap has elastic to allow boys to strap insane amounts of gear under it. The external frame keeps the back cool and provides a really stable frame. These bags are the best external frame packs I've ever seen. Bag the orange BSA packs, do your boys a favor, and buy them this pack. If your boys insist on internal frame packs, or you're doing canyoneering and need something shoulder width, try this: Jansport Big Bear - http://www.backcountry.com/store/JAN0303/JanSport-Big-Bear-63-Backpack-3600cu-in.html |

Bombs Away
11-07-08 ![]() |
This is the ski for bombers. If taking a full speed roll over a cornice, laying down three turns, and then lapping it back to the lift, these are the boards for you. They will rally on groomers, crud, packed powder, the deep stuff, whatever. They are stiff: they will not pop in the deepest snow and turn smearing spoon tip lovers should look elsewhere. These are heavy skis with a long sidecut. They like to go fast in a straight line through whatever Sierra cement or week old Utah crud you can find. If you like to lay it over and just go, buy these skis right now. They get really fun with some Salomon Race Plates. |

The best 2 day trip bag
11-06-08 ![]() |
I spent the last three years cramped inside way too many flying cigar tubes. This bag was a life saver. This bag will carry a laptop, all your cords and peripherals, pens and cards, an extra pair of clothes, an extra pair of shoes (mens 12), a waterbottle, and some food. The material is super durable and really stands up to being shoved under the seat in front of you. What I really love is the zippered messenger flap, it allows you to get to your laptop or files without flipping open the lid. This is critical when you're stuck between two midwestern sausage eaters and don't have a lot of room to move. The front pocket has an expansion zipper. I'm amazed at how much this bag can hold and still qualify as a carry on. |

Good, but not great.

These are pretty good shoes. I love the lacing. I love the colors, the fabric has been durable. I really like the lightweight, stable outsole with the mini-wings architecture. The only problem is the forefoot; it's too big. I have big feet, (12/13) but the forefoot on these shoes (I ordered a 13) is loose and lets you slide around. They toebox is the right width, and the shoes fit true to length, but the forefoot is "tall." There is a lot of room above my feet, which is really disconcerting. Everything else is great, but the weird forefoot sizing has me all thrown off. |

Death to Swamp Thing!!! I love this jacket.

I love this jacket. I have had other PTFE membrane jackets that breathed about as well as an asthmatic in a garbage sack. This thing is a revelation. No clammy inside. I rallied it hard through the Wasatch Trees today in 2 feet of fluff. Normally this leaves me feeling all sweaty around my shoulders, but this thing breathes so well. I'm 6'4" 200 with a shorter torso and longer arms. The Large fits perfectly. I threw my boards in the car packed with snow. When I stopped back at the office, the snow had melted into a puddle on the jacket. I picked it up, shook off the water and it was dry as a bone. One note: This is GORE Performance Shell, not XCR or Pro. Performance Shell is the new name for XCR (It is not rebranded Gore-Tex Classic) -- http://www.kokatat.com/goretex.asp?fabric=xcr. It's soft and quiet, but also held up to some heavy tree skiing with a lot of high speed scrapes. Not a mark on the jacket. I love this thing and would recommend it to anyone. |

What to do if torso is too short
02-10-09 ![]() |
I bought this for my wife and the fit was really strange (See below...) We found a North Face Nuptse 700 in a medium and it fit her perfectly. The Nuptse jacket fit perfect in a medium, while the MH small was super weird. If the Sub Zero's arms are too long, too bunchy, and the torso is too short; take a trip off the TNF hate bus and buy the Nuptse. I know it's difficult, but it's a better cut jacket. |

God is in the details
01-26-09 ![]() |
These are great shoes, as evident in the details. They have a wide, low volume forefoot that really cradles your foot. The lacing system surrounds the whole foot really nicely. The foresole is wider than the the forefoot on the shoe which makes these super stable, especially around corners. The yellow in the picture is actually a warm gold color; these are really sharp looking shoes and they feel great. The rubber is super sticky and bomber. If you're looking for a solid, stable, low profile trail shoe, these are it. |

Wierd Sizing
01-22-09 ![]() |
I love my men's subzero and I was really excited to get one for my wife. She is 5'4" and I bought her a small. I expected the torso to be short, but it barely came to her belt line. The arms and torso had a really strange cut. The sleeves are very large where they meet the torso, making it look like she had Senor Stay Puff in a head lock. We checked my jacket, and the arms have a much more athletic cut, as does the body. The sleeves were just shy of being too long, so there's no way to size up to a medium. Great jacket, if you're cut out for it. |

Solid Binding, good price
01-07-09 ![]() |
Binding is compatible with any pre-drilled kids Rossi or Dynstar ski. Three screws in the toe piece, four on the rear. Seems well constructed. Brakes are a little narrow, you may have to bend them depending on the ski. |

Good ski, watch the brakes
01-07-09 ![]() |
This is a great little ski, light weight without feeling cheep. You can mount any Rossi or Look kids binding, not just the recommended Rossi Comp Kid binding. Pre drilled makes it super quick to set up, just some wood glue and a DIN chart and you're good to go. The ski is very wide under foot, so plan on some brake bending in your vice. Other than that, great ski, good value. |

Best. Jacket. Ever.
11-06-08 ![]() |
I realize that no jacket is really the best ever. But if it's cold in Park City, I pull on this jacket. It's warm, it breathes, the ripstop nylon is super durable (had a run in with a stucco wall, jacket doesn't have a mark on it), and it keeps enough moisture off to stand outside and watch pretty much anything. The cut is generous without being michelin-esque. This jacket is cozy, comfortable, good looking and long wearing. I've had mine for 8 years and it still looks as good as the day I bought it. This is the best, cold weather, stand outside and watch a winter concert at the Canyons, jacket ever. It's a little too warm for heavy activity, but packs up tight so you can throw it in your pack as an emergency shell/insulator for winter camping/snowcaving/ski touring. |

I love this thing. I have worn it everyday for nearly 3 years. The construction (especially the glass) is bomb proof. It's greatest trick is being a highly technical wrist computer, while looking the part of a well designed time modern piece. It is a little bit James Bond, a little bit Q. Maxwell Smart would have loved this thing. If only Suunto made a shoe phone... |

Hooray for the Vario
11-06-08 ![]() |
We took a week at Red Castle lakes in the Uintah this summer. 12 miles in, these filters were life savers. We had 10 people on the trip and usually filled 20-30 32oz water bottles twice a day. (I'll let someone else do the math) With two filters we could knock out all the bottles in about 15 minutes. It gave us time to enjoy the trip. These are fairly large, but worth both the weight and size tradeoff. When compared with a sweetwater we had with us the Vario filled 2 nalgenes in the time it took the MSR to fill one. We ended up just putting the sweetwater away for most of the trip. Design is idiot proof, remember to occasionally release the air pressure after pumping, this will keep it from leaking like in the review below. |
