Garmont G Ride G-Fit Alpine Touring Boot    This product is no longer available

sweet touring boot   02-15-04

This boot has great feel for a guy with an average instep. I had been trying to convince myself that some Scarpas would be right for me, because Kirkham's had a sweet deal on them, but they are just waaaay too high volume for an average foot. I don't have flat feet or anything...just a regular, old arch. But those Scarpa Laser's felt like big boxes on my feet...no control. I love the instep buckle on the G-rides, so you can lock it down and get a good performance fit, without crunching your toes. And they are super lightweight. I'll be wearing these things for years to come! I definitely recommend getting some Surefoot orthotics, though.

Obermeyer Straight Down Jacket - Men's    Read other reviews of this product

best jacket for the Rocky Mtns   12-27-06

I live 20 minutes from Alta & Snowbird, and with the light snow here you don't need real expensive water repellent fabric for resort skiing (different story, of course, for the backcountry). But you do need something very warm & comfortable to just throw on & know you're going to be good for the whole day with just a zip turtle base layer underneath. This is definitely just a resort jacket, and gets very warm when you bootpack out of Catherine's at Alta. But just unzip the pit zips & front all the way while you're hiking & you're fine a minute afterward. Worth cooking a little on the hike to be toasty on the lift ride back up. Would not recommend this coat for Mt. Baker or Whistler (being a Seattle native myself) unless it were a low-water-content blower pow day. But I would DEFINITELY recommend it for Utah & Colorado, and for anyone who spends snowy days in the city, too.

go for the brownie color   01-09-07

I got this gift for my wife for Christmas. We live in the Rockies and ski at Alta almost every weekend, so we don't need Gore-Tex or eVent or anything like that -- the snow is so light that you're not worried about waterproofing. But you definitely need something warm, and this jacket delivers. But I got the pink, and when it arrived it looked more "pepto bismol" pink than light pink. So I exchanged it for the brownie color and she loves it. She wears it often around town, which I think is key for any jacket like this -- you don't want it to be JUST utilitarian, because then you don't use it often enough. If you're doing dawn patrol tours in LCC a couple of times a week, use an eVent shell or some other layerable jacket. But if you just want to wear a heater while you're lapping the Supreme lift, you'll be very happy in this.

Smith Phenom Spherical Goggles    Read other reviews of this product

world's perfect goggle   12-27-06

Awesome goggles -- subtle, but distinct design. Fits my face perfectly. I have a somewhat small face & nose, but not so small as the Smith Anthem. But the Smith Prodigy was very large on me so this is perfect. I used to always wear the smith cascade, and these are the ideal replacement. Fits perfectly with Smith Holt helmet.

Smith Holt Helmet    This product is no longer available

great helmet -- good combo w/ Smith goggs   12-27-06

Love the helmet -- it fits me really well, since Giro's tend to pinch my forhead & back of my head like a football. LOVE how the vents in front integrate w/ my Smith Phenom goggles. They really do help with the venting of the goggs, which is a problem with almost ALL other helmets I've used (about half a dozen in the last 10 years). Smith making helmets is brilliant -- there really is synergy between being a goggle designer & being a helmet designer. The two work well together.

Smith District 2 Sunglasses - Interchangeable    Read other reviews of this product

District is a great pair of sunglasses!   05-15-06

I've owned multiple pairs of Smith sunglasses, and have loved them all. But lately I was in the market for a perfect "all-around" pair that would work for driving and hanging out, but that was also lightweight enough and high performance enough to use for frequent bike rides. I looked at multiple pairs, and the District Sunglasses fit my face well (small face), and didn't ride to high on the nose (small nose), and also didn't just look like racer, swoopy glasses (read: Theory) so they were good for hanging out, driving, and biking. My most favorite pair yet!
