Better than Paclite
11-12-08 ![]() |
I'm 5'10" 180 lbs. 41" chest, 32" waist. Longish torso. This jacket is cut just loose enough to fit a down sweater underneath. The length is perfect for me (mid zipper in front, mid pocket in rear) The fabric feels better against the skin, and seems tougher than Paclite. The hood fits a helmet nicely, and the neck comes up all the way to the nose. The arms are average length. I chose the Exum over an Arcteryx Alpha SL because of its superior fabric and better face coverage. It is has a slightly greater overall volume than the SL. I also prefer the flap over the main zipper, to a sealed zipper, as sealed zippers are sticky and I tend to raise and lower my zipper a lot as wind exposure changes. The hood adjustment is perfect. This is an ultra light shell, meant to be stored in a pack until conditions change. It weighs a pound. It is not a canvas ski parka. |

Good shell, crap liner

Got mine on SAC. The shell is the same as the Tornado Pro, but it has a booster strap. The liner, however, is pathetic. I'll replace it with some Intuitions. |

like a Gamma SV
11-12-08 ![]() |
I'm 5'10, 180, athletic build. I bough a medium. This jacket is made from the same fabric as an Arc'teryx Gamma SV, with similarly excellent construction. The fit differs slightly. The Shift jacket is slightly longer. The Shift neck is smaller. The wrist openings of the Shift are too big. If the wrist openings weren't so big it would be perfect. |

Full coverage

Pro: Burly fabric, big hood that actually fits a helmet, great face coverage, pockets are nowhere near pack straps. Con: a little heavy. Sleeve pocket is difficult to open and close with one hand Comments: This jacket is long. The other dimensions are on the big side too, but not as dramatic as the length. It is a perfect jacket for long torsos, nasty weather and deep snow. If you have a short torso it will hang down below your ass. |

Skinny and long

I think the design and quality are excellent, but this jacket, like many MH products, will fit slim, long limbed folks best. |

You won't over heat

It is a loose knit, good for not too cold days or under a hood on freezing days. |

Very good, but...
11-04-08 ![]() |
The straps are too short. I'm 5'10", with a longish torso. I have the medium pants. I emailed Mountain Hardwear, and they told me if I added material to lengthen the straps it would not void the warranty. Otherwise the pants seem very solid, and are a great fit for someone with an athletic, but not overly skinny build. |
