Works great!

Used it a total of 3 months on the road. Never got sick. Some tips, no particular order: 1. Buy one large silk neckerchief, 2 Nalgene HDPE narrowmouth bottles, 4 high-capacity AA NiMH batteries, and a wall charger. The neckerchief is your filter for "floaty stuff" and the Steripen snaps into the mouth of the Nalgenes like it was made for it, providing a watertight seal. Shake instead of stir, and no spilled water! Buy all this and never have to find bottled water in rural China again! 2. Dry it thoroughly before storing! Otherwise you'll get scale (limestone) buildup between the sensor electrodes and the pen will refuse to start. 3. With NiMH 2500mAh batteries, you can purify about 40 liters before a recharge. 4. Note that the Steripen DOES NOT remove harmful chemicals like oil or gasoline from water! To fill your water bottle safely from a source with oil or other petrochemicals floating on the top, submerge the bottle first under the water mouth down, wipe off the mouth underwater, and turn the bottle right side up to fill. Cap the bottle underwater and bring it back out. |

The helmet gold standard.

Has everything. Adjustable ventilation, adjustable head size, removable washable liner and earpads, bomber visor. Helmet plastic is a little soft so you'll get some scratches crashing through trees. Runs a little big, if you're at the border between sizes get one size down. |

Warmer than Kincos.
03-30-09 ![]() |
Warmer (wool vs. Kinco's Heatkeep synthetic) and more dexterous (precurved fingers and corrugated leather versus Kinco's flat fit) than either of the Kinco 901 or the Kinco 1927KW. Used in 10F weather and I was warm whereas with Kincos I would have needed liners. ***HOWEVER***: I suspect that these gloves will not be as durable as the Kinco 901 given their thinner leather, use of synthetics, and thinner stitching. I would not use these as a winter work glove. |

Simple. Warm. Lots of pockets.

I love 'em. 32 waist, 34 inseam and the Large fits perfectly. Pockets are in all the right places and are secure. Cuffs don't seem to be getting slashed up by edges like some other pants. And they're warm but the leg vents work well to cool off when hiking. |

Cute and hot.

Tiny little Japanese stove that heats really well! 1 cup of water takes about a minute to boil. If you're doing a long trip, bring matches and sandpaper as all piezo igniters have the same problem - they build up carbon on the tip and don't spark as well. So sand off that carbon and it should spark just fine. Un-documented second function: if you ever want to wake yourself up in the morning without coffee, just touch your thumb with the spark igniter and hit the button. YEOW! |

Bomber bomber bomber.

Best mitt shells out there. Tough and waterproof. Works well with wool interior gloves as mentioned. Palms are grippy. |

Worth the money.

Polarized lenses are excellent for use on the water. Earpieces are bendable to fit your head better, which for me is the best feature of these! Earpieces wear through eventually (years) but Smith will send you new ones free. Yellow lenses work well for shooting and evening biking. |

Meh.

Compass doesn't work all that well despite calibration. Temperature sensor is in the wrong spot, so it is influenced by body heat. Plastic rotating bezel feels cheap. Controls are fairly intuitive. I wound up sending it back. |
