DAKINE Deluxe Tune Tuning Kit    This product is no longer available

Pretty but not very functional   08-23-08

This would be best for a beginner tuner without very specific tuning needs but beware, you'll need additional supplies. You would still have to buy an iron to heat up your wax and stones of different grits for proper deburring. The bevel tool only allows for angles of 0 OR 2 degrees, which may not be fine enough for skiers/riders who want edge bevels somewhere in between or >2.

Great backcountry day pack   02-20-09

I have the 32L version and I find it to be perfect for a day in the backcountry. It carries my safety gear, skins, lunch, puffy, and helmet (if I'm feeling ambitious) all on the inside. Pros: - The front pocket fits the safety gear (shovel, probe) as advertised, and not only the small BD shovels like the BD Outlaw pack. - The larger main compartment has a small zipper pocket at the top, which fits small tools or goggles. - the large main compartment zips open almost to the bottom of the pack, making the bottom easily accessible. - comes in small sizes (I'm 5'4 and the pack fits me well) - great ski carry system (A-frame is my favorite) - reinforced gear loops for ice axe, etc. - clip loops at the front for variably sized objects or puffy jackets. - side straps to compress the profile when the pack isn't full. - though it doesn't come with a helmet pouch, I've strapped my helmet onto the outside using the two diagonal straps. It also fits inside the large pack with shovel and all. Cons: - needs another small pocket on the outside for small objects not to get lots on the bottom - waist straps aren't as wide as they can be (e.g. with a multi-day pack)

Great for everyone except short women   11-25-08

My one problem with this pack is that the back height is little too long for me. I'm 5'3 and I wouldn't mind if it was a little smaller (the straps are also not optimally positioned for a woman's frame). Otherwise, I would love it. The pack's most distinguishing feature is its small volume. The capacity is 671 cu. in., which is very small. A helmet won't fit inside this pack (though I find it's pretty easy to attach it to the handle). If you want something to carry an extra pair of goggles, gloves, skins, and a sandwich, this is your pack. It's small size means there's not much room for stuff to shift around. It's flatness also means it doesn't shift your balance back too far, even if you put bricks in it (though I can't say I tried).

Petzl Attache Locking Carabiner    This product is no longer available

Amethyst   07-10-08

One of my climbing instructors recommended these biners by name. The lock spins open and closed easily so that you can do it with one spin of the finger. This can be good or bad: if you're afraid rope friction might open it, it's a bad thing, however, I find it very convenient.
