Wool for summer   04-30-08

Nice summer shirt. Like most smartwool it's slightly on the big side, so order your normal size if you want them to be usable in casual settings, or down a size if you want skin-tight layering. They're very stretchy so the fit is fairly flexible. My philosophy is that if you're layering, you probably want long-sleeve base anyway. I slightly prefer the slimmer fit of the Icebreaker tees, but Smartwool seems a bit softer & truly scratch-free, and the fit/finish is excellent for both. Collar is not too baggy or tight - a problem with some cheap off-brand wool shirts. Time will tell how this lighter weight holds up to use and washing and resists stretching out, but my experience with other smartwool suggests it'll be fine. They won't replace cotton tees every day, but for certain activities (cycling, hiking) they're ideal.

Great cycling shorts   10-21-08

These are perfect for spring/fall weather, they keep your legs and knees warm in a wide range of temps without overheating. Wool is a great moisture and temp-managing fabric, and these are nice and thick with a tough weave that resists snagging and pilling (at least over the 300+ miles I've put on them). Just the right thickness and wind resistance for a 40-degree ride without freezing, or a 70-degree ride without boiling. Chamois is comfy, too - you'll forget you have these on after the ride and wear them around the house. I'm not convinced by all Swobo products, but these are very high quality and the real deal.

very nice   08-03-08

little bigger than the 23 Conti Gatorskins I replaced, but not so oversized that you'd confuse them with 25s, these ride smoother and faster than the Gators. With only 150 miles so far I don't know about long-term durability or puncture resistance, but so far so good. They seem tough, no cuts so far in mostly urban riding, and they soak up bumps that would've gone through the Gators straight to my spine. Also much easier to mount than the Gators, which nearly broke my levers.

Outstanding   04-30-08

My go-to biking layer when the temps are in the 40-65 range, also good for below that with additional layers. Sizing is pretty accurate, the long arms and and stretchy fabric make it possible to size down for a tighter layering fit, I like it in my ordinary size (L) because it still layers well but can also work as a casual shirt. Holds up well to repeated washings - use woolite and the gentle cycle, also helps to turn it inside out. Nice that you don't have to wash every time you ride like my synthetic layers.
