Why Arc Teryx is worth that $   09-08-08

I have tested a lot of different makes of outdoor gear and arc teryx seemingly has cornered the market on "the best" for the outdoor enthusiast. Sometimes I wonder if that reputation is based on price tag alone and the misgiven accolades by those who don't neccesarily have the experience to comment. In my opinion, there exists STIFF competition in the jacket arena for Arc Teryx, by the likes of Marmot and Mt.Hardwear, but these soft shell pants by Arc Teryx stand alone. They provide for unmatched moveability and wind resistance; over two layers, you're gonna be hot. They have held up well to 5-8 washes and maintain a resonably flattering fit (although I don't get too wrapped up in that). Without a doubt, the best softshell pants on the market.

an arc teryx flop   09-06-08

Yeah, NOT good. My main problem may be sex/size related, but the interior stitching was so raised that I can barely make a fist with these gloves on. Furthermore, the wind resistance is just not there. I can agree with other reviewers that the design quality is there, the stitching is robust, the pull loop is nice, but who gives a crap about that when you're flippin hands are cold? I know some don't like to brand mix, but if you want the best for the $, look at the ever-degrading North Face. In addition to high school student attire, they still make an awesome glove.

Stop comparing, and buy this one   09-06-08

How many base layer fleeces can you look at? Seriously, this one is great and an excellent example of why Arc Teryx maintains the rep that it does. Very soft to the skin, superior articulation, smooth surface (great for reducing friction under your mid/top layer), and nice cut. And as a word of caution to those new to the arc teryx brand, the tops are cut small. Honestly, they are cut for a woman of petite frame, take my word for it.

1 year appraisal . . .   08-27-08

What I use it for: riding the motorcycle, backcountry hiking, and skiing. I'm testing this thing for sure. I live the in NC mountains. Plus side: exterior is aesthetically perfect. Zippers are still in tact. Wind resistance has not reduced AT ALL, despite about 5-8 washes. Negative side: The interior is not good. I have a dog (a pit with short hair) and the hairs are embedded in the lining. It has pilled a lot, which is almost good for wind resistance but no longer soft sans base layer. And the pit zips are annoying. I am small framed and I can never seem to get them in a position that they don't rub. And, really given the wind resistant nature of this jacket, I wonder why they're present in the first place - it's not a summertime item. I'd like to add that I am a 34DD and the small fits like a glove. Every one's bodies are different and I advise looking hard at the size chart. But for sure, it's cut for a little person.
