Toy for alpine adventure

I purchased this sled to haul loads up mountains and sled back down. It makes a great haul sled with a few adjustments, but its use on the ride down is best in perfect powder conditions. In soft powder, this thing is a hoot. Easy to carve turns and look graceful. Anything less, however, including groomed ski areas, makes steering impossible. You may as well be on a saucer disk, attempt a turn and you just slide downhill sideways until the terrain catches the sled and dumps you on your head. I plan a few modifications for my next trip. Adding more tie down options for gear, and rigging some kind of stopping/turning brakes. I don't think the brakes will help turning much, but they should provide for a controlled, safe run, straight down the slope. (A more comfortable alternative to glissading.) One other warning. The plastic bolts and nuts that hold the sled's leg straps worked loose on my sled, and were lost. Find a way to failsafe the bolts (glue, safety wire, ?) or secure the straps with a more foolproof alternative. Conclusion: A lightweight, stong pulk that tracks well and pulls easy. A fun sled for the descent, if you like death rides. |
