spy mc   04-25-03

These are some solid glasses. They weigh a lot for plastic frames/ lenses and feel like they could withstand being sat on by a relatively fat person. The shape is a little different than the standard wraparound shades you see these days -- they're pretty flat. You could probably prescriptionize these with some persistence.

fogless   04-25-03

These goggles perform really well. I've never had any fogging problems with them at all. I'm not the biggest fan of how they look--too flashy with all the colors and the chrome and whatnot, but that doesn't mean poop on a powder day. I have had goggles that perform as well, but overall I would give these a pretty high score for function. Oh, they work really well with the helmet, too.

styley glasses   04-08-03

These are probably the coolest looking glasses I've ever had. The aluminum is very unique and the styling is really different. They're also surprisingly lightweight. The one complaint I have is that the lenses aren't really dark enough for super bright days. Otherwise they're great.

great little tent   04-09-03

I took this tent with me on the AT and it was great. We went through some horrendous weather and it held up like a champ. It's super tough for its small size and amazing light weight. There are more comfortable tents out there, but if you're concerned about weight and sturdiness this is an excellent choice.

Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Deluxe Sleeping Pad    This product is no longer available

definitely a compromise   04-25-03

The question you have to ask yourself is, “Do I want to be comfortable hiking or do I want to be comfortable sleeping.” I chose the former when I headed out to hike the AT. I decided that saving money and weight were more important than having the super comfy sleep setup. I'm glad I did. These pads aren't all that comfortable but they weigh almost nothing, cost very little, and are fine swinging around on the back of a backpack rather than inside it. I got used to slightly uncomfortable sleeping pretty easily and I think the payoff was worth it.

Love Them!   07-29-04

First, these aren't briefs in the sense of granny panties--more like full coverage bikinis. They are fairly low-rise, which is perfect. The material is super comfortable and really form-fitting. They don't bunch, or move at all. I've worn these to the office, under tight skirts, and to play frisbee golf at Solitude. They work great in all settings. They truly are seamless!

scoop   04-28-03

It's become a pretty basic style, but when these came out they were cutting edge. Mine are pretty nice, but there are a couple things about them that doesn't thrill me. First of all the bridge is made for people with super thin noses, so they kind of sit up funny on my nose (I guess that's actually my fault) and the other is that the silver stuff is chipping off in spots. I doubt this is a warranty issue.

fuse is good   04-25-03

This is the answer to all your melon smacking problems. I'm absolutely blown away by the venting system. You can go from sweaty and nasty to cool as a cucumber in the middle of a descent on the fly without even slowing down. And the vents are huge. It's also super lightweight so you don't feel like you're even wearing a helmet after a little while. It's the greatest.

transformers are back!   04-09-03

This is the best toy I've had in years. Your buddies on skis will get the first turns at the top, because they will drop in first as you fumble around putting this thing back together, but you'll be the one laughing as you scream past them about halfway down. It is truly the best of both worlds. I find it unnerving in bounds though, and I wouldn't ride it at the resort more than absolutely necessary. It's real flexy and it makes these scary popping sounds when you throw down an edge on hard pack.

Awesome Sports Bra!   07-29-04

The Patagonia Sport Top is a superb sports bra. I've worn it trail running and mountain biking during SLC's 90+ degree days. It kept me dry on a 4 hour ride, and the support was perfect. This is one of the better fitting bras I've tried; no rubbing on the shoulders or around the bottom elastic. I definitely recommend it to active chicas!

the easiest   04-25-03

This is by far the easiest beacon to use. It's so simple that I found practicing with it is kind of redundant. It's like practicing walking on flat ground (sober). The range is pretty lame, but realistically I think it would be plenty in almost any real-life situation.

Ever since I saw the Damn Yankees last rock video, I knew I had to have a pair of these. My first pair was called "Blades", which is a tuffer name, but these look just as tuff. I always get compliments on them at our softball games or down at the dirt track. My girl likes them so much I got her a pair, too.

super functional   08-07-03

I have about 20 pairs of sunglasses but these are my daily drivers. They're the most comfortable and functional of all my glasses. The wrap is perfect, the lenses (bronze) are great in bright light, and their large size offers great coverage. Not to mention they make me feel like the terminator -- not that I've killed anyone while wearing them.

everyone should have these. everyone.   04-28-03

These should be issued to everyone at birth. They are the greatest. If every person from every country had a pair of Down Booties it would probably solve many of the world's problems. Maybe not the whole hunger thing. My dogs stay toasty warm in the coldest of Utah nights. They are super soft and very lightweight. They also give the wearer a comical smurfish appearance. How could anyone want to fight a smurf?

I've had lots of sunglasses and these are the best ones. They are very light, nicely wrapped around and they look cool. They seem to be pretty beefy, so I don’t think I'll break them but the lenses seem to be kind of easy to scratch.

This is a great warmish weather jacket. It's really light and super breathable. It's not as stretchy as some of the soft shells I've owned but it's way better than a hard shell for everything but an absolute downpour.

patcap shirt   04-28-03

These shirts are great for winter or summer activities. I wore mine quite a bit as a base layer this winter and stayed dry and comfortable. I also hiked in it quite a bit and it kept the sweat from bugging me. It does tend to get stinky pretty easily, but I'm not too concerned with that when I'm in the backcountry. Overall it's a great, simple comfort solution for just about any outdoor activity.

too much   04-15-03

These gloves would be perfect for going to Everest, or into space. As long as you don't have anything to do with your hands. I got these at the beginning of the ski season and found out right away they're just too warm. And once your hands are in them you might as well just have a couple of stumps, because they're pretty much useless. I'll give them good numbers in the star dept. because they are really well made and I imagine all that warmth would come in very handy for someone, just not me.

R.5 top   04-09-03

This top is unbelievable. I rode in mine almost every day this season, and I missed it when I didn't. I think it will also make a great pajama top for kickin around the house in the off season. It's crazy soft inside and really warm for how thin it is. It gets the sweat gone with a quickness and doesn't stink like roadkill after 1 use. I would give it 6 stars if I could afford more than 5.

super light board   04-08-03

This is a really nice board for freestyle. It's incredibly light, so there's very little spin weight to worry about. It's not very stiff, though, so it doesn't carve well. This makes it really easy to butter your landings so you don't catch many edges. The bottom line is that this is an excellent freestyle board but not a good free ride board. If all you do is hang out in the park this is the board for you.

tractor skins   04-25-03

These work surprisingly well except for a couple of shortcomings that I can see. They are truly a bastard to pull apart (as are most skins). But that comes with the territory. I wish they were made for each size of split board, instead of just two sizes that are too short on purpose. Also a clippable tail would be a cool addition, too. Other than that they work really well.

Nikwax TX Direct Wash In Waterproof    This product is no longer available

nikwax dwr   04-28-03

This stuff is pretty expensive considering you can only wash 4 or 5 garments per bottle, but it is worth it. Pants and jackets that you thought would never be waterproof again suddenly repel water like new. It will last less than a whole season, but 8 or 9 bucks every couple of months isn't much. It's a lot less than buying new gear, and you will be amazed at how well it works.

These are some of the coolest glasses I've ever had. The lenses are amazing. Unbelievably clear. Because of my unusually wide noggin I had to heat the frames and widen them. Now they fit perfectly. The silver color is truly boss, and the sienna brown lenses will make your eyes happy on the sunniest day.

Boeri Shorty Air Helmet    This product is no longer available

boeri shorty   04-25-03

I really like the way this helmet looks and I used it for a couple of seasons, but it's just too hot a lot of the time. During the winter it's fine, but for spring skiing it's too much. The vents aren't big enough to make any difference at all. If you're going for the Billy Badass Harley Rider look, then it's great, but functionally it leaves quite a bit to be desired. I even talked to a guy who got rid of his because it whistled!?!?

I've had my rack for 5 years and 3 cars now and it's been absolutely great. These crossbars are super super strong. I've loaded these things up with 100's of pounds of gear and driven across the country--they were flawless. I've only worn this shirt a couple of times (I've only had it for a couple weeks), but already it's a welcome addition to me closet o' ski gear. I think it will come in handy as a really versatile piece I can use as a base layer, middle layer, or even as a kind of sweater. It packs down to a nice small size and is very lightweight. The styling is a little strange, with the whole mock turtleneck thing going on, but as a functional piece to wear skiing I have very high hopes.

I needed a pack that was a little bigger than my Heli Pro, so I got the Poacher. This pack has a bunch of great features, like the access from the front and back of the pack. It's super nice to not have to take my snowboard off the pack to get something out. I've had the Heli Pro (DAK0043) for 3 years now and it's still in perfect condition, despite the fact that I use it every day. The Poacher looks to be built just as well.

I'm diggin my El Cap. It's a really versatile piece of clothing. It's best worn as a base layer. Nice and soft and wicky. A lot of the time I wear mine as a light second layer under my shell. It's nice because you can zip it up and it covers your neck, protecting your neck from the wind. I think the best outerwear you can get is the stuff that's so comfortable you forget you're wearing it. I forget about my El Cap every time I put it on.

maybe i'm a mutant   04-12-03

It seems like everybody just loves these goggles except for me. I've never had any fogging problems with them, which is nice, but I can't seem to get them to fit right. I've got a Boeri Shorty, which is a kind of big helmet, and that may be part of the problem, but there was always a gap on the sides right by my temples that let in a ton of wind when I was riding. Every time I wore these I started crying like a baby. So I got some Oakley A Frames and the problem is solved. Overall they're ok goggles, but make sure they fit well with your helmet on before you buy them.

The North Face Redpoint Optimus Jacket - Mens 2002 Model    This product is no longer available

redpoit optimus   04-09-03

These are really nice jackets. They have the drawstrings inside the pockets so they aren’t hanging off the side of the jacket. They also have a really nice big pocket across the back where you could store a bunch of stuff without it limiting your movement. The thing about the optimus that I don't like is that it's cut kind of short in the front. This is so it doesn’t get in the way of a climbing harness for ice climbers. It just looks a little strange. But it's a killer jacket. It's super super warm and comfortable without being too bulky.

I spent quite a bit of time with these on the AT and I think that's the only part of the trip I would have changed. Buy a filter. These things make water so nasty it's almost undrinkable. a frames   04-25-03

I've never been a giant fan of Oakley products but these goggles may have just changed my mind. I got my first pair of A Frames despite the fact that they look really cool and just because at the time, it was a really good deal. They sucked. They fogged up every time I put them on. It turns out that Oakley had a problem with their coatings that year and quickly fixed that. I got another pair this year and they are great. I've never had my new ones fog up at all and the lenses seem to be relatively scratch resistant (for goggles). They fit my dome perfectly and I really don't see any need to switch brands again. Good stuff, even though they look cool. Hopefully I'm the only person who notices that.
