SD's Hurricane Will Blow You Away 09-10-04

I got by with a plastic poncho until I got caught in a 3-day rain storm on ONP's wilderness coast this year. The wind made my poncho useless. I needed a light-weight, compact rain-shell that didn't cost $200. I couldn't be happier with Sierra Designs' Hurricane LT. You can vent under the arms and through unzipped pockets to keep cool. The short hem keeps the jacket out-of-the-way while climbing rocks or on more difficult trails. The hood could use a stiff brim and the fabric could breathe a little better, but for the money, it's a great coat.

The Sierra Designs Hurricane parka is a great jacket, made even better by its great price. It has similar waterproofness to more expensive jackets like Marmot or North Face, but at a fraction of the price. This jacket is very compressible and light to wear. Also, I thought the sizing of the Sierra Designs jacket was better than others I have tried. The size large was a great fit compared to Marmot (large too big, medium too small). I highly recommend this jacket for a waterproof, light solution.

| This jacket really keeps out the rain. I love the visor-like insert in the hood that keeps rain out of your face.
There are very handy inside mesh pockets for water bottles or gently folded papers. The outside pockets have both hook and loop clasps and zippers to keep contents there dry too. If you don't zip those pockets, the hook and loop closure will likely keep your stuff from falling out.
Also, the jacket is good for blocking out the wind.
The only area for improvement is that the coated material can get wet with sweat. I think an inside mesh would be (a little) more comfortable. |

If you want to stay dry and have a limited budget, this is the jacket for you. But if you'd like a jacket that you actually may wear somewhere other than the backwoods, you may want to upgrade to the Marmot Oracle or the North Face products. I tried the Hurricane and found it too "plasticky" and not breathable enough. Also the design is short. I like the feel of a jacket that covers my butt a little more. And the hood can't be tucked away. Like I said, I was hoping I'd like the LT Hurricane more because of the great price, but returned it (with absolutely no hassle) and bought a Marmot Oracle which has been great and much more versatile off the trail.

This Sierra Designs jacket is as worthy as the tents. I remember backpacking and staying an extra night at a site because rain was so bad. I stayed in the tent the whole day and kept dry and warm. Now I can confidently say I could hike out into that pouring rain with this jacket and be happy. It's extremely water proof, like wearing your tent. The ventilation, inside pockets, and draw-able hood are bonuses. This jacket even comes with a stuff sack! And you can wear it for style too. I strongly suggest this piece of rain gear!

When I first unpacked this jacket, I was not impressed as I thought it would be too short and destined to be a round the block dog walking jacket/windbreaker. Luckily, a few days later, we got smooshed with three days of rain. My prior jacket was "water resistant" (which is paralleled to my being cake and doughnut resistant) and not much good for a solid downpour. I donned the Hurricane Parka and instantly fell in love. Not only did I stay Sahara dry, but I keep discovering goodies each time I wear it. I love the pit to wrist zipper under the arms, the double inner pockets on the left side and the hood draw string. The collar stands high in the front and looks wicked sweet with the hood lowered and zipped to the top. This morning,I discovered the zippers which close the pockets. I am very satisfied with this jacket and could not get a better bang for my buck.

Spent two weeks in beautiful, brutal Ireland. In a day we experienced every kind of weather. This jacket packed away into a cargo pant pocket and kept me dry and warm in rain and 70-kilometer winds.

This is a great parka for the price. I had a North Face rain shell prior to this one and it seemed to breath a bit better. However this one is almost half the cost. It feels very durable and is very light weight.

This basic, functional parka is a good deal. The seams are taped well, making it totally waterproof, which is not usually the case with $50 jackets! Put some fleece on underneath and you have a pretty good winter setup. I liked this one enough to buy it again when I lost my first one, which showed no signs of wear after a good solid five years of use. All in all one of the best deals I've seen on a parka.

I could hardly be happier with this jacket for what it is - a cheap, quality, good looking shell. It is very waterproof but after about 6 months now its finish is starting to wet out a little instead of causing the water to bead. Breathability is good for walking around but not sports. I doubt you can find a better jacket for the price, and it beats the Marmot Precip with its quality/price ratio.

| This waterproof parka is perfect for cycling in any cool-temped weather (rain or shine). I wear mine as an overgarment on cooler days... I love the full length zipper in the sleeve that allow air to circulate inside the jacket after I've worked up a sweat. Pockets on the inside and on the outside are also waterproof - keeping my wallet and other items dry.
All in all - an excellent value for the money. |

I like the jacket a lot because of its light weight and stylish design. The zippers are actually semi-waterproof and the pockets are easy to reach too. Rain beads on it and just runs off, which is great, but I give it a '4' because breathability isn't very good. It is a great jacket for school or work, around town, etc, but definitely not for running or sports. Packing...it might be OK as long as you don't wear too many base layer. In all, I highly reccomend it for the price and quality.

Fully taped, waterproof / breathable 100% nylon, 3.6 oz. / yd2, 2-layer nylon taffeta face with DWR and dry polyurethane coating, includes a stuff sack, 8,000 mm waterproofness, 2,000 g/m2 / 24 hrs breathability. It appears to be waterproof, but it doesn't "breathe" like I hoped it would. The torso is short on me but the sleeves are long enough. I'm 6'1" with a long body and bought an XL. It's the least expensive rain jacket I found, so it's probably a good value.

I'm really happy with my new red Hurricane. Normally, I wear a small and this small is a bit more snug than other companies, but overall the cut of the jacket along with the big sleeve vents make it money for spring hikes when it's a little dewy in the morning. I also like the stuff sack that comes with it, packing down to about half the size of a Nalgene bottle. The price of the jacket is unbeatable for what you get.

It’s good for the price because I didn't want to spend 100 bucks for a rain jacket. I used this for a week in the Rockies. Best for off and on thunderstorms. The jacket isn't as long as I would like, but it kept my upper dry. I liked the zipper arms to add ventilation when working up a sweat. The zipper got jammed but was easily fixed. I'll just have to be more careful when zipping. Packs a little smaller then a 2L Nalgene. I don't think this would stand up to scraping on rocks or bushwhacking because of its thin material.

I would say that this parka would suffice for any outdoor enthusiast. It moves well, not quite like wearing a trash bag (but close). If you live in the outdoors (i.e. guiding etc) you might want to spring for a higher-end jacket. I've used this jacket for running and its breathability is more than acceptable, but why are the pit zips down by the wrist? They dropped the ball on that little move. The Gear/$ ratio is great. Enjoy.

Ive had this jacket for about 8 months now and have put it to some use. It keeps you dry during rain falls but you still have the wet feeling on your arms if you have a t-shirt on. I am 6'3" and bought a XL and it is just a little bit shorter than i would like. The hood could use some support because in the wind it constantly will fly back off of my head. The jacket isn't very breathable and I wouldn't recommend wearing it if the temp is over 65 degrees. The only ventilation the jacket has is around the underparts of your forearms to just above your elbows which unzips the entire way. But for the price i guess you cant expect it to breath very well.

| Huurricane parka is a great parka to buy !! It is light and give you the protection you need to go out while raining time. In addition to it, Parka Hurricane is easy to storage. I bought one, tried it and order one more parka but in different color.
Thanks !! Pedro Torres.

Bought this for the Arizona monsoons. Used this in heavy downpour to light rain. The only complaint is that it does get hot when wearing this jacket. It's not very breathable but the arm zips help when it gets too hot. Other than that one thing, this jacket rocks. Completely waterproof, nothing gets through. It's somewhat windproof. Very lightweight. Two inner pockets come in handy. Love the adjustable hood, hem, and cuffs. Also enjoy the visor on the jacket, keeps the rain out of your face, so you don't need a hat. Definitely satisfied with the jacket.

got this parka using a coupon so i saved a few bucks off retail. after using it a few times in inclement weather, the parka def held up. summer rain can be tricky b/c the interior can stick to your bare skin when sweating. wore short sleeves under and had to open the vents while moving around...kinda defeats the purpose of waterproof. nice parka overall.

I was looking for a low priced solution for an everyday rain jacket. I wanted something light, easy to pack into a small space, and ultimately waterproof. I found what I was looking for in this parka by Sierra Designs. There are many high-end rain parkas out there that do a wonderful job and may be slightly more breathable, but for the money, this parka can’t be beat. If you have all the money in the world go with Arc’teryx, Patagonia, or North Face, but if you are strapped for cash like most folks, go with this parka by Sierra Designs.

A good-priced parka that's effective at keeping you dry when it's raining. It could use better vent placement, as currently the under-forearm vent-zips don't really seem to do anything to help me cool off when over-heating.

This Sierra Designs jacket is made of great material, but the design has some flaws. It is too short in the front, but the length in the back is perfect. The hood is a bit small too. Other than that, the jacket is nice. Very waterproof, and the sleeves are a good length. It's half the price of all the other rain jackets too, which made me buy it. I'm a poor college kid, so the North Face and Marmot jackets aren't in the equation. This one was a great buy.
