I work for the park service and do a ton of backcountry hiking. I've had these since may and have they have done well. the rubber is good and sticky on slick rock. the soles started out great, fairly stiff, good for going over lots of uneven/rocky terrain. however I have recently noticed that they are getting pretty soft under the ball of my foot. the chaco arch support is there and then some. I'd say it's a little bit more arch support than their sandals. I like it, some may not. the leather has been durable, and the perforations really help them breathe. they were pretty comfortable in 100+ weather. the uppers are coming unsewn on one small spot. overall, I like them. I got the "nutbrown," color, and they have a classic old timey style that looks pretty good

I really like these shoes. Perfect fit. Light shoe. Good arch support. Exactly what I expect from Chaco.

Excellent sole comfort, and arch support, although it took me about 2 weeks to build up a heel callous strong enough not to blister... I had to get through it though, they are too comfy, i ordered a pair of the mesh soon after because i started wearing these to work.. I do wish my heel hadn't been so messed up though...

Pretty good shoes. These are MUCH stiffer than my other Chaco sneakers, but still don't feel as solid as Chaco sandals. Everything feels pretty good and they appear to have the same sole as my other Chaco shoes, which has held up alot better than I expected. I wear my other Chaco shoes pretty much everyday out on the trails at work so if these hold up as well in the soles but with a stiffer shank I might be in love.

If you like the way they look, go for it. They're arch support is really comfortable. The shoes grip very well. And for $50, you can't go wrong. One thing I will say, when I was walking on a white tile floor, the black soles did leave slight tread marks. But whatever, these are hiking shoes, not tile walkers.

I got these when the price was 49 dollars; I don't think that I'd pay anymore for them than 49 dollars. Like the other review they grip well, but for me the heels slip and are chaffing the back of my heel. The inside upper portions of the heel are leather which increases the intensity of the rub. I'm hoping that this will subside as I break them in more. I definately wouldn't recommend buying these at the current 69 dollars or the full price of 99. Also I thought that the toe area would be wide like you'd find on Keens; they aren't as wide as they appear in the photo, so if you have wider feet your toes may feel a little cramped.

Slippery Redrock 03-23-09

Awesome shoe. I love Chaco but the hard rubber makes for a really slippery shoe. It is also quite loud...sounds like you are wearing tap shoes. Great shoe Chaco but put a different sole on it!

| Overall, these shoes are doing their job,and I'm pleased with them. Of course I got them on sale, so I'm not sure I would have paid full price for them. Generally, I like Chaco products. These shoes feel sturdy and they have good traction on the trail; however, the footbed in this model isn't my favorite from Chaco.
There is no question that their arch support is pretty aggressive. It's so substantial that I ended up ripping the insoles right out of the shoe and sticking another set inside. That made me a bit of a sad panda, but I got over it.
I also have fairly wide feet. I tried two pairs of these shoes, and ended up going a full size larger than my chaco sandals to get them to fit well. They're a little long because of that, but I'm OK with that since my toes don't jam up in the front of the shoe at all. Other comically wide footed people will understand that kind of trade-off.
The shoes also slide a bit on polished surfaces, but its a hiking shoe, so that doesn't much matter. However, when jumping from rock to rock, or even trudging through snowy patches, they grip extremely well. I even wound up on a snow mobile with them and they held up surprisingly well when I got the machine stuck in powder.(Though I don't recommend that anyone takes these out as serious snowy weather shoes -- that's not what they are.)
Despite their downfalls, they're comfortable, sturdy, and I like the way they feel. |
