Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's
You dawn patrol before work, hit the trail in the afternoon, and find solitude in the wilderness. We know. We're out there, too. So when it came to developing our own line of outdoor apparel and equipment, we didn't think like a company, we thought like the obsessive outdoor addicts that we are. We tapped into our collective experience, expertise, and passion. We tested, tested, and tested some more. The result? A line of premium gear that is as good or better than anything else out there, and we priced it low because it seemed like the right thing to do. Hit it hard, love it, break it. If you don't, we will.

Awesome!!!   01-27-09
Matthew Tabrys (52): rating
I recently bought one of these and this thing is awesome! This is my new favorite base layer. I'm 5'8", 160, 38.5" chest, and I opted for the small. It fit really well, tight like a base layer should. It breathes extremely well. It kept me dry the entire day. Even though it is wool, it is merino wool, so it didn't itch me at all. Even in colder weather, I wore just this under my shell, it still kept me pretty warm. The length is a little on the long side which is great, because you can tuck it into your ski pants and help seal it up and keep some snow out, and the heat in. It felt great, and did exactly what it was supposed to do. The best part is that after a day of riding, there is no odor retention. So if you are going on a weekend trip or what not, this would be perfect. My only complaint, was that the sleeves were a tad on the long side. Wasn't really an issue at all, just something to be aware of for potential buyers.

really soft and functional. Just be aware that the merlot colour is rather pink...

Great everyday layer   01-15-09
Babak Sakaki (39): rating
I have two of these, along with the Zip Tee and a Patagonia Wool 3 that round out my baselayer quiver and I must say these BC.com crew shirts not only feel good, but look good as well. The thumbholes are trully a godsend, and the material is incredibly comfortable. Note: The Crew is made in China, the Zip Tee is made is Canada. Honestly, the Chinese made garment is just as good.

Great shirt; colors are poorly represented   07-27-09
tim h. (9): rating
I'm 5'10", 160, and a Medium fits perfectly. Not too tight and I could wear it in public solo if I wanted to. Comfy fabric compares well to smartwool/powderhorn/other wool baselayers. My disappointment however, is in the Tahoe color. The Web site seems to depict Tahoe as a darker blue, which works for me... however, upon purchasing this shirt, I discovered that the Tahoe color is BRIGHT TEAL. Not that this is a bad color, but I'm going to be returning it, as this just is a much more attention-getting color than I prefer, and doesn't work as well for me. I haven't tried any of the other colors, but since they're out of Medium in everything now, I'll wait until the next round of sales before trying this shirt again in a different color. Definitely a good value for the money (as are all the backcountry.com products I've seen), but please, please name colors in ways that help customers know what they are getting.

good deal   07-26-09
Lawson Bunch (5): rating
High quality materials. I wear an XL in BC brand tops, I am 6'4" 220 and this thing fits like a glove. Very close fitting. Light weight. As other have said the thumb holes are a bit off but I still find them usable. You really cannot go wrong for the price. I mean lets face it merino wool is the best material for baselayers.

Yes Please!   07-11-09
Chad Boyer (4): rating
I have done nothing but love this shirt. I hike and run in it and have yet to be let down by it's features. The thumb holes fit well and it keeps me cool. The merino feels amazing against your skin. This is the best base layer I own!

Not bad   06-12-09
mjwood (1): rating
Merino wool crew top with thumb loops? Baby, you had me at thumb loops. With this basis, you really can't go wrong. But...there are some concerns to point out: the thumb loops are too small and they sit on the top of the end of the sleeve, so it twists to accommodate the thumb hole usage. I still love my Smartwool the best. However, all this having been said, considering the price, I do recommend buying this shirt.

Almost Perfect   05-04-09
Darksider (3): rating
Yes, as other reviews have stated, the thumb holes are lacking. They are too small, and the one on the left arm is not where it should be without twisting the sleeve a bit. Even though it has these flaws, it is still one of my favorite shirts. The merino wool is of high quality, and performs just like the more expensive names. The cut is athletic, but it is stylish enough not to totally look like you are wearing a baselayer top when you wear it by itself. It is awesome to wear while lounging in the winter, but it really shines as a baselayer under a softshell or by itself while hiking around 65F.

Great shirt, crappy thumb holes   04-29-09
Christopher3000 (3): rating
I like the shirt a lot; its nice and long, so it won't come untucked if thats how you like it. Plus, the sleeves are long, which is nice for a lanky fellow. HOwever, the thumb holes are useless; they're a) too small, and b) misplaced. in order to get my thumbs into the holes, I have to twist the sleeves around, which constricts my forearms. Its not comfortable to wear the thumbholes. I can't decide whether to return the shirt or not, because I really do like it as a layer, but I bought it to have another shirt with thumbholes...

Great shirts.. really long sleeves, which i can never find. Why not have some normal colored ones too? You know, like black? grey? green? whatever. Really great shirts though.

If I had longer arms... and it's actually blue...   04-06-09
SN0WT0WN (4): rating
I'm kinda short at 5"5' with an athletic build. Usually a regular size S cotton T fits me just fine. This wool shirt fits me fine in the chest/armpit area but the sleeves are just too long... The Tahoe color is really more of a darker teal/turquoise color than blue. Not really feeling that color. Material is nice though.

Pretty nice   03-23-09
dlo2828515 (2): rating
This is a nice, lightweight layer, I like it. Its comfy and whatnot and fits pretty close to right, little long in the body to get the sleeves to fit the way I like but considering I will be tucking it in half the time and it likely won't untuck, it's really not a big deal. As others have noted, the thumb holes are a little small for a mens shirt but not so bad as to be useless. I was on Rainier this weekend in every type of weather known to man from still and sunny to near white out, windy conditions. Seemed to work fine. I have an REI brand lightweight layer that is going to be seeing a lot more drawer time. This one fits better and is more comfy. Gave it it's first wash and hang dry, fit has not changed. So far so good. I gotta be honest, I really like brands that I like and along with Mountain Hardwear, I have always been pleased with Backcountry.com product and service. So buy one already, I can't do this all day.

Backcountry almost nailed it.   03-13-09
Jud Hanna (11): rating
I am 6'0" 185lbs and just received my medium today. It fits perfect in arm length and torso length. I was looking for slim fit, which it is, but not too tight except it hugs my arm pits a bit more than i would prefer; however, it is nothing more than noticeable. I will agree with everybody on the thumbholes. They were a selling point for me, but I'm not quite sure who's thumbs they were designed for. Also, they are misplaced; when you wear the sleeves without a finger in them the opening falls directly above my index finger knuckle. Although the cuff can be spun to push your thumb through, it does create twisting overlaps in the bottom 1/3 of the sleeve. I'm inclined to suggest that maybe the thumb holes are in fact index finger holes due to size and placement. Perhaps none of us are aware of a new trend such as this.

itch free, odor free   03-11-09

Great piece of gear. Same quality as you would find in an ibex, smartwool, etc... I liked the long cut as I'm kinda lanky. Got the 4 stars because the thumb holes are really small, so small in fact that they cut off circulation a bit.

Cozy Layers   01-27-09
Steve Tibbitts (262): rating
I just picked one of these up since I've been jealous that my wife has had some of them. She wears hers every day. I'm going to be doing the same. They're great for running, hiking, sleeping or whatever. They fit very true to size and are definitely not too baggy. The arms fit just a little long which is great if you have monkey arms like me or if you use the thumb holes a bunch. The thumb holes are a bit too small for me but it's a fairly easy thing to adjust if you know someone that is half decent with a sewing machine. It would be nice to have them just a hair larger out of the box though. The abyss/smoke is just a little lighter color than in this picture but still a dark blue. In my opinion just another great product from backcountry.com. Keep 'em coming!

Good shirt   01-23-09
ArkansasNomad (33): rating
I love ALMOST everything about this shirt. It's really soft, a good fit, and well-priced. However, my wife & I both recently bought bc.com long undies and noticed that the stitching seems to be off making the left arm's thumbhole ill-placed. Also, they thumbholes are too small. I would buy this shirt again, but wouldn't mind a few minor changes.

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's   01-20-09
Jeff McGill (7): rating
This is a great layer, I love to wear this around the house, and up on the slopes. The only thing is that it runs a bit large. I'm 6'2" 180lbs, and normally in Icebreaker i wear an XL. I got an XL in this, and I was swimming. A large works fine. Also, the Abyss/Smoke is a bit lighter than the picture shows.

Definitely a Favorite!   01-10-09
MatV (13): rating
This shirt is great! Incredibly comfortable no matter what you're doing in it. Great for casual wear, but also really good for anything active. So far its kept its original size after a few normal washes and it fits relatively tight like a base layer. Worth the price too.
