Backcountry.com Luft 800 Down Sweater - Women's
You dawn patrol before work, hit the trail in the afternoon, and find solitude in the wilderness. We know. We're out there, too. So when it came to developing our own line of outdoor apparel and equipment, we didn't think like a company, we thought like the obsessive outdoor addicts that we are. We tapped into our collective experience, expertise, and passion. We tested, tested, and tested some more. The result? A line of premium gear that is as good or better than anything else out there, and we priced it low because it seemed like the right thing to do. Hit it hard, love it, break it. If you don't, we will.

Down That Moves   12-06-08
Kim Havell (54): rating
The perfect down jacket & layer for a woman on the move. Awesome feminine cut and love the guacomole color, bright and smooth zippers, inner upper pocket,2 zip hand pockets, great stitching and light shell material, and extremely warm. It is true to size so does not fit a lot of extra underneath but functions well as a very warm outer layer and/or under a shell. This jacket functions very much as a "sweater" and gives you all the bang for your buck while serving many needs. Great for skiing, hiking, climbing, and very packable as a back-up layer. A great versatile product for your outdoor clothing arsenal. I'm 5'8 and wear a medium.

Lovely but if you have ever had children (even one) seriously consider a full size larger. My wife has Never Ever worn XL anything (except for T shirts) - the large hugs her hips VERY very Very tighly - ooops - after insult - returned for an XL. Guess now she is an XL??

Backcountry.com Luft 800 Down Sweater - Women's   02-02-09
Ahren Castledine (29): rating
This sweater is one of the best constructed of its kind. Definitely competes with other jackets I have owned that are from other, more known brands. The fit is very feminine and the "puff" is not existent, especially for an 800-fill. I purchased it as a layering piece for under my hard shell (keeps me extremely toasty) but now find myself wearing it around town, too. It is absolutely one of the most practical, versatile and fashionable pieces I own.

Sized too small   05-28-09
3pinNan (1): rating
I wanted to love this jacket. I read reviews before ordering that said it ran small. I usually wear a large or XL, so I ordered the XL. It was very fitted to my shape, but I really could barely get the zipper up over my bust. I have never had an XL size be too small for me. I don't know why sport clothing manufactures assume that all active women have no bustline! I bought a Patagonia Down jacket in a Women's Large instead and shipped this one back.

Favorite BC piece so far   02-27-09
Snowgoat (70): rating
I have worn this jacket in Vancouver, BC and freezing temps in Utah and it does just as well if not better than my 600 down TNF jacket (which is heavier and bulkier). I got this one to downsize and I am not disappointed. It is so lightweight but so warm. The cut is flattering, I have had several people compliment it and ask where I got it. The sleeve length is great, a little past my wrists. I got a M and I am 5'5 and 130lbs. and it fits just right. It packs really well too, compresses well. Paired with my Ibex base layer I am doubly warm. I highly recommend the Backcountry.com Down Sweater!!

Just got this jacket in the mail today and I love how it fits! The sleeves and the body of the jacket are long, which I like...I'm 5'8", 135 lbs and I ordered a medium. Fits perfectly!

Tall and skinny fit   01-11-09
w/o - Angela (3): rating
Was hoping this would be my best answer for an affordable down sweater--all the warmth without the bulk. As an avid skier, I was looking for the best midweight layer money could buy. Unfortunately I was disappointed when I could hardly bend over with the small zipped. I am 5 ft tall 115 lbs, 28 in waist. The medium fit better in the waist but was too long in the sleeves and back length--it stuck out from my North Face jacket. Now I may be dropping the big bucks on the Patagonia sweater or the North Face down sweater. Lucky you if this fits! You are probably tall and skinny....

gorgeous jacket, fit is a bit off   12-17-08
gabrielle (1): rating
The fabric and construction of this jacket are superior. The stitching pattern for the baffles looked a bit strange at first, but I think that's what contributes to this garment's fit & movement. The jacket fabric feels sooo soft & smooth. I was a bit surprised by how thin it is, but I suspect it's pretty warm anyway. I haven't worn it outside to fully test it, because I probably have to return it due to the size. I was right on the border of XS and S according to the size chart, and went with the S. The jacket fits *perfectly* everywhere except the armscye, where it's just a bit too tight & binds. The sleeves are a bit longer than average, which to me makes them perfect - no gap between sleeve & glove. I'm hesitant to exchange it for a M, because I suspect I'll be swimming in it, but I can't wear the S.

Performance and Style   10-15-09
kerrycalve1508904 (0): rating
I purchased the BC Luft Down Sweater specifically for an eight night trans-sierra backpack trip in Sept. Weight, of course, is always the issue and I wasn't disappointed. This and a Gore-Tex shell were all I brought for layers. I never once got cold. This jacket is toasty warm, comfortable and soft. It just feels great. I love the way it fits. It moves so well with you. I'm average size, 5'6" and slender and I bought a medium. I read where one reviewer was disappointed with the sleeves that they were stretched out when they got it. I feel the way the sleeves are designed is a plus. I really hate sleeves that grab my wrists tight and bunch around my gloves. These sleeves fit over gloves very nicely. I'm not a flashy girl, but I went out on a limb and bought the teaberry color. It's bright and looks really sharp. When I returned from my trip I brought the jacket to work and two of my co-workers who are my height and also slender tried it on and really loved it, but for one draw back. They are both really busty ladies and the medium didn't fit around their chest. The fit is feminine and flattering, though. If you are big-busted, you may want to go up a size. The only unfortunate thing, nobody's fault I believe, is somehow I got a hole in the sleeve right above the cuff. I don't when or how it happend, but feathers were coming out all over. So when I got back I contacted BC to exchange it and I explained the situation and, as usual, they were fabulous about returning it and another one is on its way. The affordability makes this a five-star beauty. Kerry

for small hips and big shoulders   10-01-09
Lena.kh2092125 (9): rating
After reading all the reviews I got L (I'm 5'6 with 39inch hip and 36inch chest). I'm pretty much swimming in L on the top, but it's nice and snug in the hip... will probably do great with a layer under it, but I was hoping to use it with just microweight smartwool shirt under. The fill is very soft and comfy and it packs small, will try it on backpacking trip this in 2 days. Want to try M, but now the price went up again...

long and lean!   09-14-09
Vanessa H. (10): rating
This jacket is wonderfully cut if you're tall and slim(ish?) - I'm 5'11"/135lbs and the medium *just* fits - no sweaters under this jacket for me, which is fine since I wanted this as a slim medium warm layer under a shell. If you wear a C cup or larger, and have a "normal"-sized rib cage (I guess I'm saying if you're not petite), you may want to size up. I wear a 34B, and if I was any larger, the medium wouldn't fit. (However, the arms may be too big then, so you may just want to look elsewhere. I also have the Patagonia Upside of Down jacket, and it's a more generous feminine cut. It's a thicker down jacket as well, but not too puffy by any means.) For me, being the sasquatch that I am, the Luft's arms are perfectly long, and the back has ample coverage as well. The photos above depict the cut of the jacket pretty accurately. The carbon color, on my computer at least, looks a little green-grey, but it's really a very neutral light grey. An inside pocket is nice to have, and the slightly gathered cuffs are softened by ribbed cotton on the palm side. As Martha would say, "It's a good thing." Ideally, I'd like a two-way zipper, but it's a minor complaint. (and shhhhh: I found this jacket on geartrade for a steal. You may want to check there too if you don't mind not being able to return it.)

Adore this jacket   08-21-09
CHenny (0): rating
I absolutely adore this jacket. Can't wait for the cold weather just to see how long I can get away with wearing something so light in Chicago. It's super light-weight and compressible... took it on a trip to Peru for the evenings in the mountains and wished it were colder so I could wear it more.I am about 5'7" and 135 lbs--fairly slim with long arms--a medium fit me perfectly. Many times sleeves run short and these were great. It's not bulky and is flattering to a woman's curves. The Carbon color is definitely not black--it's like a graphite gray with more of an orange than red interior. Great detail. I'd buy another just for fun (if on sale again). Recommend it and enjoy!

beautiful sweater, got it in red, its really warm, the paneling helps to keep it slim and not fluffy at all, it looks great on the body, its compresible, it would be better if it came with a stuff sack or if you could compress it on its own bag, but its not, great piece!

I read some reviews before ordering, so I ordered a medium instead of small, which is what I usually order. I'm 5'5", 130 lbs with larger shoulders and an athletic build, and the medium fits me perfectly. The jacket is really warm, and I'm very pleased with the quality.

Got this for my lady friend. She had wanted a down sweater type jacket for awhile. She is 5'8" and the medium fit her like a charm. She likes the Teaberry color and the fit better than the patagonia down sweater. She always is cold but with this piece of gear she stays warm. comfortable and functional.

great jacket   07-06-09
n_d3169383 (1): rating
It's a great looking jacket and a little lighter in color than on the photos (closer to medium grey). It is very very light. I normally wear size Medium but liked the grey color so I bought Large instead since there were no Medium in stock. I was worried it would be too large but it is perfect and I don't think there is room for a sweater. For a reference I am 5'7" and weigh 125 lbs. Hope this helps!

Good deal   06-18-09
rap3103984 (0): rating
This down sweater did its job, and was a super deal (less than half the original price). I took it up Mt. Shasta, mainly using it when we would stop for breaks, and I certainly was not cold. The fit is not quite what I had hoped (baggy around the middle), but I will probably have it under a shell in the future anyway.

perfect fit!   06-04-09
bowman.1011882020 (2): rating
I'm 5'7" 135lbs and the small fits perfect. The sizing is more like shirt sizing rather than jacket sizing. I wear a small in shirts and 4 in pants if that helps. I probably could have worn a medium, it depends what you're using the sweater for. Sleeves are long, but don't get in the way. The only issue is that it is starting to lose some feathers, pretty typical though.

practical   05-28-09
adklivin (0): rating
I am in love with lightweight down. . . . that being said, this jacket will do the job. However, as far as aesthetics go - it's not the most appealing or flattering jacket. I have the grey color - which makes the person wearing it look kind of like the michelian man. The color is flat and drab. It's cut is semi-flattering, but still a bit too boxy. I ordered the medium, b/c so many reviewers said that it has an "athletic cut," . . . . i border on small/medium all the time - so I ordered a medium. Wrong idea. It runs big. And the arms are long - which worked for me - (5' 7''). All in all, this is a practical jacket - I will use it for function, not fashion.

The perfect down jacket for skinny tall girls. Sleeves are too long and it is tight on hips. I ordered L and XL sizes. Xl size is the same on a bottom as a large and huge on shoulders. I will return it.

Fashionable yes, functional???   05-14-09
Dale T. (30): rating
For going down town this jacket will do fine and is fashionable. Colors are a bit overdone. Functionally this jacket is limited as far as layering and the flare one the bottom is overexaggerated. For excellent choices on down jackets/sweaters check out Patagonia/ Mountain Hardwear etc. They pride themselves in functionality. Sleeves are long but OK if you are 5'110' or taller.

The hubby bought this for Mother's Day in Carbon. 6'0" and size 10 and the XL fit with plenty of room. Wouldn't go any smaller as it's pretty tailored in the hips but length in arms and torso are amazing. Sooooo soft inside and out as well. Love it and am ordering another in a second color. Also ordered one for my sister-in-law who is built the same. Can't wait for Fall!

great fit   04-20-09
gre3037885 (1): rating
I'm on the smaller side, 5'2" and about 110 and I have tried half a dozen or so down jackets. They are always too big in the waist in too small in the hips. Thank you backcountry for creating a women's jacket that actally fits women! The arms are long, like others have said, but that just means my hands will stay warm. This jacket also has a higher fill weight(7-9 oz) than many of the bigger brands. The material in the pockets is a little scratchy, but considering the price, fit, and warmth, that's hardly worth complaining about.

I am extremely picky about fit and style in combination with functionality and this jacket truly has it all. I had pretty much given up hope of finding a warm jacket for the windy and constantly chilly San Francisco climate, but this jacket saved the day. I was afraid the size small would be too large for a petite frame and look too "puffy" but it doesn't at all. The fabric is also of a very high quality and has a beautiful yet subtle grid pattern to it. Big thumbs up on this down sweater over all!

Successful purchase   04-19-09
jhh2936943 (1): rating
This is my first down coat and I am very pleased. It's not the warmest coat you can buy, but combined with an outer wind-breaking layer, it does the job. It's definitely a "cool" coat and it's nice to go to bright colors for a change. I haven't noticed many feathers escaping (but yes, some do escape) and it's staying clean even though I wear it out to rock climbing areas and it falls on the ground. Overall, it's a great purchase.

Definitely slender fit   04-18-09
bevinm7594022 (5): rating
Pros: Curved baffles define your curves, long, sexy cut for a down piece, warm for the weight, and you can't beat the price! Green color is prettier than pictured, but still pretty bright. Cons: The sizing on this is definitely on the slim side. I am 5'8", size 8, ordered a large, and the sweater is quite snug on my narrow hips. The waist fits well, but the bust is too tight for 36D, so I'm sending it back. I also agree with the reviewer who said that the cuffs seem stretched out.

Great jacket   04-06-09
mir3056103 (0): rating
Great down jacket & layer, I bought it in carbon, and got lots of complements. Flattering feminine cut, excellent quality all around, very warm and not bulky at all. In fact, it looks so good, that I wear it in the city as my main jacket, and have not yet worn it skiing. I am 5' and 115 lbs, got medium and can fit a sweater underneath. Wear sleeves rolled up wigh the red lining showing, very pretty look.

Needed a new puffy for my pack but this is a lot more. Jacket is very warm yet fashionable. Nice details, inside valuables pocket and magenta trim. Light weight fits easily in a pack. Normally wear a medium but with the femimine styling the large was a better fit. So cute that it doesn't always stay in the pack!

Alright...   03-26-09
Maren (7): rating
This jacket was certainly a steal. It's a very affordable 800 down. It fits well and is flattering. My complaints are: it's cheaply made. The wrists are jersey knit material that seemed streched out when I got it. The pockets are lined with a rough nylon material that catches on things. All in all - I'm sure it performs well, but the quality is lacking. Luckily, the crummy parts of the jacket are too visible.

Too Fitted   03-23-09
themoldenh1385054 (4): rating
I loved the look, the price, the color, and the feel of the fabric. I'm not overweight and I have long arms. This jacket was made for long arms and that's about it. I'm 5 foot 9 inches and I weigh about 132. Despite the flare at the hips you need to be a stick without hips to wear the jacket. I ordered a medium which did fit. The jacket is seriously fitted to your shape. The arm holes on the body are very close to your arm pit and feel constricting. It just fit and would never have allowed for anything more than a thin shirt let alone wearing a sweater. The sleeves were great, but I would never have been comfortable in this jacket. I didn't reorder a large. I just didn't love the style enough to want to.

perfecto!   03-17-09
bloomx4471681 (1): rating
I ordered this to replace a north face 800 fill jacket that I have worn to pieces. The Luft is custom made for my body type, is snug in all the right places and roomy where I need it to be. I an 5"7' and about 135 with broad shoulders and a small waist. Long sleeve length helps avoid the dreaded cold wrist. I have already washed it and it emerged from the dryer good as new. The Backcountry brand is a great value and attractive to boot. Highly recommend this jacket as an everyday item that provides warmth, comfort and stylishness without a steep price. Only down side is knit material at the wrists might stretch out at some point but I am hopeful it won't...

Flattering down? Who'd of thought?   03-13-09
Benjamin Herndon (30): rating
Scored with the lady on this one. She lufts it. The guacamole and maroon interior are very complimentary. And the tapered fit works great under her Marmot shell. She's 5'7" and I went with the medium. Now maybe we can leave a few layers behind on our fall and winter outings. It may not be warm enough for standing around in freezing temperatures but it's a fantastic layering addition and very light and packable. The hips do flair out a bit so it looks a bit funny when it isn't zipped up. Easy fix there though.

I love this coat. I was really surprised that it fit so well. I ordered the medium and I have really wide shoulders and it fits me perfect. It's not heavy enough for a really cold day outside or on the mountain but perfect for running around and doing errands and I plan to do some spring skiing in it. Love the color too, Grey goes with everything and the red on the inside and the collar gives the coat a nice little touch of color.

PNW Lady (1): rating
Cute fit. It does have a more "feminine" fit to it, but without having those awkward huge hip forms. I was looking for something a little less bulky that would still keep me warm in Pacific Northwest weather and this has been great so far. I am 5'5" and 130 and small fits me well. I have long arms and the sleeves are plenty long, too. The gray color is cute...lots of compliments on it.

Another killer piece from Backcountry   02-07-09
Brian B. (126): rating
I bought this as a christmas present for my girlfriend, and it garnered rave reviews from her and her family (phew!). It keeps her warm, and she's almost always cold. I think there have only been a couple of days this winter that she hasn't worn it. Comfortable down to around 10 degrees I would guess, then just throw a shell over it and you're golden!

Very Nice   02-02-09
Liz (1): rating
I just moved to a much colder area than where I’m from. I hadn’t ever heard of a down insulated jacket. Everyone told me I needed to get one because I was always complaining of being cold. I finally ended up with this one and I love it!!! You wouldn’t believe how warm this tiny thing could be. It has a perfect cut as many have mentioned (I’m 5’7 125lbs and got the small), the sleeves are slightly longer than you’d expect but personally I think it’s a great length. I purchased the grey jacket and the inside is a true red, not the orange that appears in the picture.

Sexy, too   01-31-09

I really like the way this jacket looks on my wife, very flattering. Sexy cut. It was a great hit as a present. She opted for one size larger than usual.

Perfect Puffer!   01-30-09
marion (1): rating
I have looked for two years for a reasonably priced, not too bulky, puffer and I finally found it! I have tried other brands and they just make me look like a marshmallow, but this one has a perfect form fit and is super light weight. It's great for around town and for shoveling the driveway! The only thing I could ask for is elastic in the wrist cuffs, but it's not that big of a deal. Overall a fantastic coat!

Maroon lining!   01-21-09
Stacey M (2): rating
I got the guacamole and I was surprised the lining was maroon, it looks brown on my computer, but it's cute anyway. I'm 5'5" and 120 lbs and got a S and it fits great except the sleeves are a tiny bit too long. Otherwise it's great and looks like it will be durable, also it's very packable.

The inside is maroon!   01-21-09
Stacey M (2): rating
I just got my luft 800 and I love it! I was surprised that the inside lining was maroon, it looks brown on my computer and there is no close up shot. It's fine though, I just wasn't expecting it. I'm 5'5", 120 lbs and it fits great, but the sleeves are just a *tiny* bit too long, which surprised me because most sleeves are too short for me. It's really form-fitting and not puffy at all.

Runs small   01-07-09
sncskinner1795007 (1): rating
Very cute coat, but runs small. I wear a large, with room to spare in North Face, but I couldn't zip a large in this coat past my chest! The sleeves are a great length! Order the next size up from what you usually wear.

Es ist warm.   12-31-08
Albert Broccoli (1): rating
Perfect layering piece if you don't want to look puffy (I'm puffy enough on my own, thank you very much). I wear it under an admittedly tight medium North Face 'Grace' rain shell (I'm 5'7", 170 pounds) and it is keeping me warm enough in 30-40 degree wet Seattle weather to warrant no extra layers. I was actually sweating when it was over 40 degrees. A hood would be nice, but you can't have everything for such a great price.

love it!   12-23-08
Kristen DelMastro (17): rating
This jacket rocks! The fit is perfect...longer sleeves and the length in the body is long enough as well! I wore it skiing under a hardshell the other day when it was freezing and windy outside....perfect combo! I've also been wearing it around town and it's surprisingly wind resistant...on a cold, windy day at the dog park I felt warmer than people in much bulkier clothing looked!
