| Incredible Softshell 01-13-09 |

| Had it for a few weeks now and I can't get over how well this thing works all around. I needed a soft jacket that could handle some decently harsh weather when used as a shell (ie with insulation when it gets cold enough) and this performs flawlessly. The powershield material is amazingly abrasion resistant and for all that i can tell is practically water proof(held under a faucet for ten seconds and is practically DRY! when removed). I took this backpacking in late Dec and hiked a total of about 7 miles over mountainous terrain wearing the Gamma SV the entire time. This jacket excels when used by itself during aerobic activity. The material stretches beautifully to allow for free upper body movement while providing great cushion for hauling a pack up a mountain. Needless to say it breathes fairly well and is probably the better choice over say the venta sv (less cushioned and has pit zips) for backpacking purposes. Also, I stood in the middle of a saturated cloud for many hours in the dark cold night (about 35F) wearing layers of course with a constant heavy mist blowing and intermittent annoying heavy drops of rain and remained well protected thanks to the shell-like properties of polartec powershield. The hood is large but customizable. The fleece liner is just warm enough for 45F weather wearing the jacket by itself with maybe one layer underneath and not too warm so that you don't have to take it off inside(minimize risk of losing it). Granted, I am 6'4 and 180lbs. The large fits very well. Sleeves are great and chest etc is big enough for layers. Not incredibly long ie not really a ski jacket, but certainly long enough for all other applications. The chest pockets are large and not too high so that you can still use them easily as normal hand pockets when your hands get cold. I wear it every day and i'm wearing right now. Feels great! Looks great! Love it. |

| I worked in the outdoor retail industry from '97 till '03. I left right at the begining of the softshell push and didn't get to test much. For a long time after getting out of the business I was stilla hardshell supporter without having an opportunity to test the alternative. I'm am now a convert. I will always have my hardshell for the really rough stuff, but after 10 days boarding the Tyrolian Apls, I have to say that this is the best jacket I have ever owned. I'm 5'10, 190 lbs, with a broad chest and shoulders. I got the XL cause I was a little worried about Arc'teryx slim fit. The only fit problem I had was the arms are just a little on the long side. This Jacket performed like no other, I was warm on the cool days with only a little cold on the lift, and only got hot when I was huffing snowboards up the slopes for people who were trying to learn. Thin base layer was more than enough in powder conditions. I could write more, but lets just say this sucker is bombproof, comfy as hell, and looks great(I bought the Black). BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT! |

| Slick, subdued technicality 11-17-08 |

| I have the Gamma SV hoody in black and I love the looks - not overly technical, but you can tell this is a serious jacket. Haven't had much time to use it yet, but I can give my initial impression:
Insulation is cleverly distributed and seems to be optimized for moderately aerobic activity in relatively cold (maybe 35F and below) weather. The first thing I noticed is how warm it is around the neck - seriously toasty! The material is very thin under the arms to release heat better (no pit zips, but some venting looks to be possible if you leave the pockets open). Powershield seems a bit more breathable than windstopper when I try to blow through the jacket (I compared with the new Venta AR which, btw, is awesome as well but has minimal insulation). Love the hood - can be cinched down to fit a bare head nicely, and in usual Arcteryx fashion ITS SEPARATE FROM THE COLLAR, which makes for a much nicer look IMO.
Highly recommended... so far |

| I think other people have covered the pros extensively. I'll concentrate on the cons.
1) The position of the external pockets is not very convenient. They're too high. Maybe such a position is useful for alpinists but if you're just bumming around and want to warm your hands those pockets are awkwardly placed. The Gamma MX has both high and low external pockets, that's the way to go.
2) The jacket has both the logo and the word Arcteryx written in full. That's pretty tacky. Ideally the cut alone should tell you it's an Arcteryx. If you really have to put some sign then the logo alone is enough. The Gamma MX only has a small logo on the chest. That's pretty tasteful. I resent having the word Arcteryx written in full. I feel like I've been turned into a walking advertisement for them.
3) The jacket is not that warm. Even in light cold (40ies) you can't just walk around with the Gamma SV and only a T-shirt underneath. You need another light layer.
4) I wish the hood were stowable. But it's probably too big for that. It's a minor gripe.
Otherwise it's probably the most comfortable jacket I own. I feel dry in it. |

| I'm 5'11, 180lbs, and 42 at the chest. I have both the XL and the L Gamma SV Hoody. They both fit me. The L is more form fitting but still allows layering. The XL allows even more layering, but still does not look bulky on me. Candy red is not too bad, but you can't be a wallflower and wear it. |

| great for powder days, stays warm when wet which is rare unless I take a few diggers going off of cliffs or on the snorkel days of deep snow. It is simply the one jacket for it all. Works great in the high winds as well and combined with a shell such as the AR or SV it is true synergy as in heaven. This company did their homework and did not skimp on anything. Anyone who questions the cost of these garments should eat at home for a week as I would eat ramen for a month to own this companies garments.
This jacket is incredible. The reviews before mine tell it all. Never in my 43 years of skiing have I ever had such great gear. |

| First off, the color was much better than expected. I thought it was going to be much brighter, but it is a sweet red color. Although a little ostentatious. Other than that its a sweet design. The placement of different fabrics is very intelligent. Also its warmer than most softshells. While the outer fabric is not as durable as say scholler, its okay. |

| I love this softshell. Arc'teryx gear is invariably bombproof and as with their other products, the quality of this is second to none. I've been wearing this when a full shell isn't necessary, and I've found that I'm using this nearly all the time (except when it's very wet or the snow is soft/wet). It goes beautifully with the Arc'teryx soft-shell Gamma pants I have. It's warm enough to wear with just a thin base-layer on most days. |

| I've owned the same Gamma SV since 2001. It has seen action in every climate you can think of, in every season that warrants the use of a jacket. It is supremely versatile. It won't keep you dry in a downpour, but it will shed enough water to keep you comfortable in a rain shower. It doesn't pack well, but you'll probably be wearing it.
After 8 years of use, the sleeves/cuffs are frayed and the draw cords are broken... I still wear it because it's still highly functional.
Looks pretty good, too. (discounting frayed cuffs) |

| I ordered the venta sv and the gamma sv at the same time and ended up returning the venta. The venta sv is a nice jacket but not as warm as the gamma. The gamma also has better styling and isn't nearly as baggy. The gamma has the traditional cut of what I have come to expect from arc'teryx. The only thing I like better about the venta is the cuffs have a velcro strap and the gamma doesn't but the cuffs don't seem to be stretching. I am 6'1, 145lbs and I orderd a medium and it fits me perfectly. |

| this is the deluxe Leatherman of jackets! i have done everything from ice climbing, to all types of skiing all while wearing this jacket. i have it in red and be mindful that the high-loft fleece is only on the parts of the jacket that are bright red, the lining on the dark red parts is brushed. highly breathable, outstanding water resistance, exceptional mobility make this jacket well worth the money. i wore this jacket skiing when i was 10 degrees and blowing 30-40mph. this jacket did a very good job at blocking the wind and the helmet-hood makes it even better. the hood is to big for casual use but fits over any bike or ski helmet. it is very warm but big in the arms. this is the ferrari of all jackets!! WELL WORTH THE PRICE! get it! you wont regret it! |

| My last softshell for at least 5 years 12-16-08 |

| I have been buying soft shells for the past few years and felt a little like Goldie Locks. The mediums felt like they were too tight in the torso and neck while the arms were about the right length. The larges felt too large in the arms espcially. Well, I ordered up the sigma sv medium and everything fit perfect. If you are between a medium and large with shorter than normal arms, this is the jacket for you. Now comes the best part....frigging pit zips that zip when you need to a hood that fits over helmets and adjustable cuffs. Hands down for me the best softshell for iceclimbing and mountaineering. First time I used it on Mount Washington, 70 mph gust with -45 windchill made me giggle how comfortable I was. Love this shell, just wish it was made in Canada |

| Bomber coat. 11-08-08 |

| Arc'teryx definitely lives up its standards. This coat is absolutely the best soft shell I have ever purchased. The front pockets are the first of their kind to be raised up so a climbing harness isn't on top of them, which is one of the greatest features. The oversized hood is awesome-- fits over a climbing helmet with room to spare (and I have a big dome!) the material is great-- Warm where it needs to be, soft where it needs to be and stretchy where it needs to be. I'd suggest this coat to any ice climber, mountaineer or anyone who wants to look like a badass.
This is one of the few products that I have ever purchased that I have ZERO complaints about. I plan on living in this thing this winter, and I'm ever going as far to say that this thing won't come off when I'm in Alaska climbing Denali. All and all this coat is great, and backcountry is awesome.
Love the goat! |

| The Original 12-15-08 |

| I bought a Gamma SV 6 years ago when it was first released. Being the original softshell, it was ground breaking. I have taken the jacket through the forests of Northern British Columbia, Skiing in Colorado, hiking in Alaska, trekking in Thailand, and even a couple seasons of tree planting. I have worked this jacket harder than any other jacket I have ever owned. Finally, after 6 years of beatings, I had to replace the zipper. For the amount of abuse this jacket has taken, I can't give anything less than 5 stars. When I am packing for a trip, this is my go-to item. |
