Backcountry.com's Spring Catalog Cover Photo
Backcountry.com's Spring Catalog Cover Photo
by Tommy Chandler, Photo Editor
This Spring's cover shot is by Flagstaff, Arizona based Jeremiah Watt, and to us captures one of those universal moments we can all relate to: washing up after a long stint in the backcountry. This person could be on the river, just off an El Cap route, or cleaning up after running a 50-miler in the San Juans. As it turns out, this is Jeremiah's wife Jenn. As told by Jeremiah: "After three days of being engulfed by mosquitoes in Colorado's White River Wilderness, Jenn and I had had it. Bailing on the backcountry, we wanted cold beer and good food. Jenn opted for a quick shower, I got my shot, and we were off." Pretty simple, just like it ought to be out in the mountains or desert, and we like it.

Picking a cover photo for a catalog isn't as easy as some might think. As the photo editor, I cull hundreds, if not thousands of shots to find the few great images that capture the story we want to tell. Once I've got about 10 that I think are worthy (and fit the design), I call a meeting of the marketing minds, and we all weigh in on our faves. At these meetings, usually about two or three photos really stand out. Of those, we talk about why we like it, but ultimately go with our gut feeling, have an informal vote and that is that. Afterwards, the much longer process of building the catalog ensues and I can assure you that you don't want to hear that story.
Keep an eye out for the catalog in your mailbox in mid-April. Not on our catalog list? Sign up here.
