Employee Gear Closet – Peter Barrett

by Jason Whitehouse

Peter Barrett has worked at Backcountry.com for nearly two years. He started out as a content writer and these days Peter is the Merchandise Division Manager for footwear and accessories. Fittingly, Peter is a self-proclaimed shoe freak.

Peter spends his free time mountain biking in the summer and snowboarding (in and out of the backcountry) in the winter. He also dabbles in trail running, telemark skiing, and skateboarding. Whenever you can’t find him out on the trail, you can find him on his porch hanging out with friends, listening to music, or reading a good book.

Like a true outdoor soldier, Peter doesn’t own a car. Consequently, he logs plenty of miles on each of his three bikes—and a fourth is in the plans. Peter’s the kind of guy who looks forward to the occasional three-hour ride home from Park City to Sugar House near Salt Lake City. In his own words, “Cars are so ‘90’s – 1890’s.”

Peter’s idea of a great evening in Salt Lake City would be going out for an hour-long run, and then stopping by the gym for a 45-minute core work out.

Peter has been kind enough to divulge a few of his favorite pieces of gear.

Vans Old Skool Lace

I bought my first pair of these 25 years ago - they weren't called Old Skools then. Now I have them in red, brown, blue, checkers and even Coach leather! My old feet can't relate to the new breed of puffy skate shoes—I need board feel and traction for slashing the park and rushing the stage. The best shoes ever. I think I'll get a black pair next.

Chaco Flip Sandal

The Chaco Flip is my flip-flop of choice because of its real arch support that you just can’t find in other flip-flops. I have super high arches, so if I wear a flip-flop without arch support all day I get serious back pain. Also, the replaceable Vibram sole is great because it gives great traction on just about anything.

Salomon Bio Tech T-Shirt

As far as multi-function shirts go, this one is just about perfect—it works for everything. I use it for mountain biking and running and it fits perfectly. It also dries extremely quickly and wicks as well as anything I’ve ever used.

Lafuma Active Trail Mesh Running Shoes

These mesh running shoes are super breathable and are awesome at keeping your feet cool over long distances. The Vibram soles are great for traction on the trail, and durable enough for long distances beyond the asphalt. I’ve put plenty of miles on mine and they’re still kickin’.

Camelback Mule Hydration Pack

I use this pack both for running and mountain biking. It’s just the perfect size pack if you’re going out for a couple of hours. The suspension system is great and I never have any trouble with it moving around too much when I’m on the trail.
