What is up with the zipper???? 06-04-09

Got these boardshorts on a whim... were not looking for these but found them. They are pretty chill but someone explain something to me... what is up with the zipper thing on boardshorts all of a sudden? The style and fit are cool and all but I wear boardshorts for surfing and chilling because of the ease of them.... If I want to wear shorts I will wear shorts. Ditch the zipper Volcom.
