Description of The North Face Plasma Thermal Jacket - Men's:
The North Face created the Men's Plasma Thermal Jacket for skiers, snowshoers, and mountaineers who want extra insulation in their winter outerwear. A fully seam-taped, waterproof breathable HyVent Alpha shell protects from bad weather, while PrimaLoft insulation keeps the chill from ruining your trip. Flip up the Plasma Thermal Jacket's fully adjustable, helmet-compatible hood for extra weather protection.
Bottom Line: Add some warmth to your winter alpine wear with the Plasma Thermal Jacket.
The plasma thermal works great for most winter conditions with a decent base layer. When the temp drops below zero and the wind picks up you will definitely need a mid layer unless you carry a flask.
This jacket is great! Really light and not bulky-feeling at all. The primaloft insulation (my personal favorite) is very thin for the warmth it gives. I recently wore it in CO during our cold spell when the temps got down to well below zero and it was very nice. I can wear just a t-shirt under it down to about 10 degrees F (probably lower when I'm moving around a lot and creating more of my own heat). I'd say that with just a bit a layering, like a thermal and a very light fleece it can be worn to well-below-zero temperatures. And of course the pitzips help tons when things heat up, which isn't hard to do in this jacket. The outer material feels nice and smooth, repelling pet hairs...I have 3 cats and a dog, and my BLACK plasma thermal never gets "hairy"! Unless you're intent on a 3-in-1 jacket, I would highly recommend this one!
Comfortable and warm. Recently went skiing on a cold day at Whiteface Mt. Temps were less than 10 degrees at the base and much colder at the top of the mountain. I had on a thin base layer, a fleece, and the Plasma jacket. I was never cold (besides my hands but I can't blame the jacket for that) and was actually borderline to warm when I was skiing the glades. I also wear the jacket walking my dog and wear only a t-shirt under it down to 20 degrees with no problems. Does a great job stopping the wind. I would buy the jacket again in a second.
