I use this sandal for approach & descent, because i'm the kind of person who wears sandals everywhere. My rainbow, though strong, is slippery and too thin so that it lets sharp rocks poke my feet. I'm happy with this Sanuk Crossroads now, the sole is really thick and cushy and comfy. It has an upper phylon molded body, the same material that you can find in most high-tech sneakers in the market today, ultra lightweight, yet super comfortable and highly responsive. It has a micro dot pattern that enhances traction on your feet when you're going uphill. The bottom sole is made from tough rubber, with patterns of raised and recessed squares, resembling teeth that allows it to grip surface areas. Strangely enough, the rubber feels like stealth rubber - sticky rubbers in climbing shoes. I don't know if they actually use that, but it feels that way. The strap is lined with neoprene so it stays comfortable when wet. It sticks to my feet like a wonder when I'm crossing the creeks in malibu. All in all, I'm happy. It's thick, it doesn't let rocks poke your feet, it's sticky enough for good amount of approach and descent.
