Description of Patagonia Capilene 4 Zip-Neck - Long-Sleeve - Men's:
Patagonia made the wicking Men's Capilene 4 Zip-Neck base layer for stop-and-go activities in cold conditions. Stay warm with your belay jacket over the low-bulk Capilene 4 Zip-Neck while your partner's on the ice, and then pull on a softshell and you'll be free to move in this highly insulating, stretchy base layer when it's your turn to climb. Patagonia made the Capilene 4 base layer with a jersey face and flat seams for easy layering and to eliminate chafing. A drop tail keeps your lower back covered, so heat stays in. A chest pocket keeps small items accessible, even if you're wearing bibbed ski pants or a backpack. The neck zipper lets you dump heat when you exert, and Gladiodor natural odor control keeps the stink at bay.
Bottom Line: When it's freezing—but you need to get out—go with the Patagonia Capilene 4 Zip-Neck.
Fit: 6-4; 235; 46-47" Chest; 37/38" sleeve. Fit well in the body, not too tight. Sleeves were too short - could've used another 3 inches or so.
Performance: Not as absolutely warm during periods of inactivity as I was hoping for. My first experience with Capilene. Seems better suited to active pursuits. I wore it alone as a top for a run on a 30 degree morning and was fine - warm and dry. I wore it beneath a heavy work coat and The North Face Magic softshell on a few 15 degree nights where it was stop and go at work and froze when I wasn't laboring.

I really like this baselayer. It is well fitted, and breathes well. I recently used it on an uphill hike and it kept me warm without getting overheated. I think it will work great as a baselayer for skiing.
As base layer, or next to lighter weight/silkweight capilene, this Cap 4 top offers versatility and feedom of movement and is extremely warm when used alone or in cinjunction with a fleece. I wear it alone with the R4 fleece and am very comfortable even at altitude or on a cold windy New Mexico winter day. I recommend it highly.
