Stash your gear in the Ortovox Cross Rider Backpack before tackling off-piste terrain. This European backcountry ski pack is more than qualified to meet your every need in North America's ‘puny' mountains. Stow some layers, lunch, and skins in the main compartment, and attach your shovel and probe externally for quick retrieval in emergencies. A net pocket cradles your beacon and first aid kit, and an ice axe fastener keeps your pick handy for those sketchy approaches. The chest strap features an attached emergency whistle, and two pockets on the hip belt stash your pit card or goggle wipes close at hand. The Cross Rider readily accepts your hydration bladder and drinking tube.
Bottom Line: Chomping at the bit for the backcountry.
This bag has the features you need for back country skiing/riding without the frills (which just add weight). You can stash your shovel, shovel handle and probe on the outside of the pack for easy access and the pockets on the hip belt are a fabulous feature, making your camera, snacks or iPod close at hand. Minor complaint: the sleeve for your hydration bladder isn't very tall, so the bladder can fall/fold easily into your pack. Not a big deal if you have other things, like layers, inside your pack.
