Description of Montrail Java XCR Hiking Shoe - Women's:
The Montrail Women's Java XCR will put as much spring in your step as a triple-espresso. If you're out for a day hike, lightweight performance is the name of the game. The Montrail Java XCR fits the bill with its waterproof Gore-Tex construction and deeply lugged yet lightweight outsole. Next time you head out for a hike, leave the cement shoes behind and bring something a little more sporty, such as the Java XCR.
Bottom Line: The Montrail Java XCR give you stability and traction in a lightweight package.
Narrow heel cup, which worked fine for my feet, and a quick break-in time. True to size for me. Great cushioning, my feet felt fine after a 5 day, 50 mile backpacking trip. Very lightweight for how tough the soles are an the waterproof package. However: the pull tabs are not well designed (i.e. you can't really pull on them ...). Small rocks/dirt easily get in the by your heel. The material on the toe cap was also peeling off after minimal use, so I wonder about the durability. Water proof only in toe-deep water - don't expect the uppers to keep your feet particularly dry.
So far, so good. I got these shoes to compliment my heavier boots, and these Montrails are making me smile. There is a narrow heel cup, but that works for me. The size is true-to-fit, and I am wicked impressed by the traction and comfort of this style. I have had some difficulty finding hiking shoes that can hold up to trails in the Northeast (I am a bit rougher on shoes than most, I admit), and these seem to make it happen. The snow is too deep in the White Mtns. of NH to wear them yet, but I just spent 3 days on hard-pack trails in the Adirondacks and was pretty pleased. I am slightly concerned about the fabric ripping as the spring/summer hiking season advances.
After suffering a serious foot injury, I thought I would be stuck with boots for backpacking. These gems offered the support of a boot, without sacrificing comfort. I have hiked a total of 150 miles in them so far, most with a pack, and most days over 10 miles. So far, so good, from the very first hike.
