Description of Mountain Hardwear Icestone Softshell Jacket - Men's: |
 |
Yeah you’re a guy, but sometimes the wind is so cold and insulting that you can hardly breathe and you get tears in your eyes (we know, they’re just watering from the wind). The Mountain Hardwear Men’s Icestone Softshell Jacket is here to keep you comfortable and breathing throughout nasty fall and winter gusts. Inner cuffs with thumb loops prevent sleeve bunching when you layer this slim, athletic-fit softshell under a waterproof shell for the ski season, and a pocket holds your MP3 player on fall hikes.
Bottom Line: The wind can go pick on someone else.

| Heavenly fit and comfort! 10-31-08 |

| I have tried on MANY different soft shells from the North Face, Mammut, Outdoor Research, and Marmot, all claiming to be athletic/performance fitted, but NONE of the them fit me like the Mountain Hardewear Icestone! I have a medium-slender athletic frame, 5'11'' 155lbs, and the Icestone so far has been the ONLY jacket that is both long enough for my arms and still slim enough through the arms and torso! What is more, the Icestone feels like a t-shirt against you bare skin--very comfortable. The neck opening is the perfect size as well, it is slimmed down and not bulky like so many soft shell necks seem to be. The cuffs at the hands are nice and narrow, and the thumb loops also provide a nice warm seal against the elements. At exactly 1lb, this soft shell also qualifies for an excellent ultralight piece. This is the understated softshell of the year, in my opinion! |

| Great design, questionable fabric choice 12-11-08 |

| I looked at about six different jackets and this one was the best by far. For the price I paid (about $140) it was the best deal too. I am tall and somewhat lanky (6'1" / 160lbs) and I have trouble finding jackets with long enough arms that don't fit me like a tent, but this one is perfect. I ordered a M. I wouldn't recommend it for people with broader than average shoulders or shorter than average arms. I love the chest and wrist pockets, and the thumbholes make this otherwise excellent jacket over the top. It is also comfortably stretchy, not stiff at all. My only complaint is that the relatively wide weave of the exterior fabric makes it prone to catching on stuff and absorbing fine debris like dust and dog hair. If you can handle that, this is otherwise a fine mid to cold-weather jacket, though below 30 degrees you'll definitely need to layer to keep comfortable (unless you're working real hard, in which case it would probably be fine down to about 20). |

| Great jacket for everyday use 02-04-09 |

| I bought this jacket after Christmas & it has quickly become a staple item for me.
It's lightweight, & very breathable, so it's comfortable to wear on cool days (60s-50s). The Gore Windstopper makes it comfortable to wear on colder windy days too (40s).
It's not insulated enough to have as your only layer on cold days (30s and below). For example, today the high is 34 here in Raleigh, NC, & I'm wearing it over an under shirt, long-sleeve button-down shirt, & a vest.
But I guess this is also determined by what you think cold is.
I wouldn't suggest it as the top layer if you're in heavy rain or snow, as it's not waterproof. In light rain, it's fine, as the water tends to bead-up. On days in the snow or heavy rain, I'll usually wear a waterproof shell over top.
The fit is very comfortable, as others have mentioned, & it's also a little stretchy. I can easily layer another light fleece under it, with a long shirt & undershirt.
The fabric is not like other soft shells. It doesn't have that smooth sheen. It's almost similar to a very small corduroy pattern, with much smaller "valleys" than corduroy.
The extra features are what really puts this over the top for me. The inner cuffs with thumb loops are awesome. Think of them as almost half gloves. They're great to provide that little bit of warmth if I'm outside for a short walk. As someone else mentioned, you can also use them before putting on gloves to give extra warmth. Since they're inner cuffs, it also keeps snow or cold air from coming up your sleeves.
The sleeve pocket is great for stashing keys or other small items. This comes in handy when taking a run or light hike.
One thing the description doesn't mention is that the inner-pocket has a exit point inside, at the top of the pocket, for your headphones. Some people might have assumed this, but I just wanted to provide a little clarity.
I did a lot of shopping around before deciding on this jacket, & I think this jacket is one of the best deals for the price. I would highly recommend it. |
