Description of Mountain Hardwear Mortise Jacket - Men's: |
 |
Tired of layering up on cold ski days? Pull on the Mountain Hardwear Men’s Mortise Jacket, and get your weather protection and insulation in one convenient jacket. The Conduit-laminated nylon shell blocks blowing snow and intrusive moisture, and the PrimaLoft One insulation and fuzzy Monkey fleece lining keep you toasty warm while you hunker down on the lift. Pockets for your goggles, pass, MP3 player, water bottle, and cash make sure you stay organized, and a removable stretch powder skirt blocks powdery blasts. Open the welded Underarm zips when you need to vent, and zip off the adjustable storm hood when you’re riding with a helmet.
Bottom Line: Monkey fleece lining + PrimaLoft insulation + Conduit waterproofing = a rad jacket.

| One of the best I've owned 02-28-09 |

| I've been wearing for 2+ months now, mostly for skiing in the northeast (US), and sometimes on cold days on the street. It keeps me warm on the coldest days on the slopes. It keeps me so warm, I always have to have the pit zips open. The only time I had them closed in on wet snow powder days - I knew I'd tumble - to keep the snow out. Considering how warm it is, the jacket is very light. Love the monkey phur lining. One downside is that, the lining does not zip off, so the jacket is only for cold days.
Waterproof-wise, it's pretty good. When wet snow started piling up on the jacket, I could see that it wasn't keeping all built-up moisture out, but I never felt wet inside.
The hood is big enough to cover the ski helmet if needed. Being able to zip it off is a plus. I try not to carry too much stuff, but enough pockets for me. The zipper can be finicky, especially when you zip up all the way. Because the jacket was 'set' in the open position at the top, the zipper gets stuck sometimes when pulling down, but once you figure out how, it's no problem. (Hint - keep the top portion 'closed' with the other hand while unzipping)
Haven't had a chance or need to wash, so I don't know how much trouble it'll be with the phur, but so far it is one of the best, if not the best, I've had. |

| I wore this jacket for the past week in Steamboat. The Temps ranged from the single digits to the low 30's and I was NEVER cold in it. I am 5'10" ,180lbs with a 42" chest. The Medium fit great if a bit snug under the arms. I wore it over just a heavy thermal and bibs and was warmer than I needed to be most of the time. This jacket shrugged off everything I threw at it, including snowballing myself more than once on a PowderCat day. It kept me dry and warm through all of it.
Downsides to this jacket are minimal. There is no 'real' media pocket and none of the interior pockets are waterproof. It also lacks snowshields in the pit vents.
The upsides far outweigh the down sides and I would call it a good buy |

| Great so far 02-03-09 |

| I have had my Mortise for over a month and I love it. This light weight, non bulky, windproof jacket has provided me warmth from -20 windchill up to mid 30 degree days. I have not had it on the slopes yet, but the snow skirt has kept wind from blowing up under the jacket while on 5 mile walks with my dog.
Is the zipper a little finicky? Yes, but with a Mountain Hardware lifetime warranty I am not concerned.
The monkey phur lining is great. The velcro on the sleeves allows me to seal on various thicknesses of gloves.
I will be skiing in this in Colorado in a couple of weeks so I will get to check out how it holds up in the snow. I can tell you this, even if it is not the best ski jacket I own, It works great as an all around jacket for me. |
