I bought these for my Alaska cruise. I am a size 12/14 and the large fit comfy/loose, not skin tight. I wore them to the glacier (32.8 degrees) it was windy, and they didn't do much. However, for the rest of the trip (38-52 degrees rainy and windy) they did great. They were light enough to give me that extra layer of warmth, and not so bulky that I felt that I was wearing an extra layer. The wool felt great and was not itchy. I would highly recommend these for those cooler days/night, but nothing near freezing. I also played golf in them (in 38 degrees, rainy, windy), they were perfect.
