Description of Driza-Bone Uni Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's:
Ever seen Australian cowboys and ranchers wearing those long, dark oilskin coats (in movies, or if you’ve been there, in person)? Driza-Bone probably made those coats. This Australian company’s been around since 1898. We’re going on about this because Driza-Bone also made the Uni Shirt. The Uni’s lightweight merino wool regulates your body temperature and naturally blocks odor while you backpack, hike, and ski.
Bottom Line: Australian merino from an Australian company.
This shirt seems well made enough, although there is nothing spectacular about it. The sizing seems a bit off to me though - I'm just a tad over 6' and ordered the large, and found it to be quite noticeably too small. I expected the skin-tight fit (after all, it's a base layer), but the sleeves and torso were simply too short for me. And because the quality of the garment was as average as I found it to be, I didn't exchange it, I just sent it back.
This is a standard merino wool shirt - nothing amazing (besides the fabric's regular characteristics). It could be softer, but in no way is it scratchy + this lack of "soft" makes it seem much more durable.
I am 5'11" 165 trim/athletic + had no problem w/ a M - somewhere not so tight it couldnt be worn casually, but not so loose it couldnt be worn as a baselayer - good compromise.
I have no complaints about the arms as a previous reviewer had, but I dont like cuffs hanging down to my palms either.
Yes it's Merino wool and that is great and it works like Merino wool, but right out of the box, this 190gm shirt is not as soft as a Smartwool 190gm shirt. Smartwool is very delicate feeling in this weight but next to skin, as a baselayer, I prefer Smartwool.
The fit is very close to body which is great for a base layer, however, I have no idea how they came up with the sleeve length. Sleeves need at least another inch longer. They do not even reach my wrist bones...maybe they are supposed to be like that but I do not see why.
By the way, I'm a lean 170lbs, 5'10" and wear the large.
