Seamstresses in Korbach, Germany, handmade the Continental Competition Tubular Road Bike Tire. Continental equipped these tires with Vectran, a liquid crystal polymer that defends against punctures, even under the rough conditions of a stage race. One layer of Vectran replaces the two layers of nylon that these tires used to have—the side effect being that this puncture protection reduces the tire's weight and rolling resistance. Activated silica compound in the tire's rubber enhances its grip on wet and dry roads for cornering safety and further reduces rolling resistance. Maximum inflation on these three-ply tires is 170 psi.
