CAMP (Construction Articles for Mountaineering in Premana) was formed in 1889 high in the mountains of Premana, Italy. Over the course of the next 100-plus years, CAMP developed mountaineering tools never before seen, including the ice axe, crampons, hammers, pitons, and nuts. CAMP remains one of the world’s premier climbing equipment companies.

Description of CAMP USA X4 Evo Backpack:
CAMP gave the X4 Evo Backpack both top and back panel access to reduce the chance of a stress-induced cussing bout that occurs when you spend 15 minutes looking for a glove. The Xpress diagonal ski carry system allows you to remove your skis from this pack without removing the pack from your back. At the top of a ridge, you barely have to pause to step into your skis and drop into the freshies below. CAMP designed every feature on this bag with fast-moving alpine climbing and ski mountaineering in mind.

Bottom Line: Packs should carry your gear, not hide it from you.

had high hopes for this pack, but man what a let down. xpress system does not work. it is similar to a Dakine diagonal carry system with a few key differences. you cannot tell from the picture but the loop for the tails to go through is attached to the hip belt rather than the pack itself...HORRIBLE design. this puts the weight of the skis on your left hip, making the pack extremely off-balance and useless for its intended purpose. the tips of the skis attach to a metal hook on a lanyard that is attached to the right shoulder strap. when in use, the skis nearly pull the shoulder strap off forcing you to tighten everything down to the point of discomfort, even then the skis do not feel secure and shift position with every movement you make resulting in a more horizontal carry than diagonal. also, this system is billed as one that allows attachment and removal of the skis w/o taking off the pack. i found this to be near impossible with an empty pack and no where near realistic with anything in the pack. bottom line: save your money for a proven, effective system.

Fantastic Pack   04-27-08

This is an excellent pack for backcountry skiing! The size and weight is perfect for day trips and even works well for an overnight trip when packed well. The back door opening is a great option for getting items from the bottom of the pack easily and I end up using it more than I anticipated. The express ski carrying system is the magnum opus for the engineers of this pack and works surprisingly well. This carrying system is key for fast transitions in the backcountry and makes putting the skis on the pack a breeze. it is also quite secure and I've never had trouble with it despite subjecting it to rigorous conditions. Ive booted up steep couloirs, climbed rock, and hiked talus with the skis attached with the XPress system and the skis stay in place just fine. Never had a problem. The best thing is never having to take the pack itself off to put the skis on the pack or take the pack off to remove the skis. This has come in handy many times when needing to put the skis on at the top of a steep couloir an a precarious perch! it is also great on mixed terrain while touring when frequent transitions are required. Otherwise, the pack is designed well with details suited for the ski mountaineer and overall a lightweight pack. I would highly recommend this pack to any ski mountaineer!
