Arc'teryx used Gore-Tex Softshell fabric to give the Men's Stingray Ski Pants far-better breathability than hardshells and to keep you more comfortable during both the ascent and descent. These water-resistant pants easily hold off moderate snowfall and tons of powder turns while keeping you at a comfortable temperature. Arc'teryx designed the Stingray Ski Pants with a gusseted crotch and articulated knees to ensure they never get in the way of you laying down another smooth turn or skinning up a ridge. Integrated gaiters keep snow out of your boots, and a RECCO reflector may help ski patrol find you in the event of an avalanche.
Bottom Line: Don't get all sweaty on your next ski trip.
These pants are a lot baggier than other arcteryx stuff and don't make you look like a tard like a lot of other technical gear. I've never had a problem with water leaking in even though these are softshell. Ridiculously windproof!!!! with the softshell fleece type liner on these you hardly even have to wear a baselayer on your legs. Oober comfy and don't make you look like a tool.
Bottom Line:
Unless you spend more time on the ground than actually skiing I wouldn't worry about the waterproof'ness
Skied the last two days with these, and I can vouch for their awesomeness. Nice fit, looks great, very very comfortable. Not cheap, but you get your money's worth. I look forward to using these for a long time.
I wear 42"x34" mens' pants, and the XL Tall fits well. It doesn't have a ton of extra room in the seat/thigh, but I can wear it with a layer or two underneath with no problem. Arcteryx XXL Tall pants are practically falling off me and are WAY too big through the legs.
Somewhat warm and fairly windproof, but only has a very thin lining (which is a good thing IMO; you can layer under shell pants, but you can't make really warm pants cooler.) Breathes well, and you can sort of vent them through the pockets. (If you want insulated pants with full zip vents, try the Sidewinders instead.) No problem with water even when I had to ride a chairlift up and then ski down through active snow guns, nor when falling down a few times while trying to get my ski legs back. Ankle gaiters work well; the grippy elastic holds tight on ski boots.
One minor concern for skiing is that the insides of the legs aren't really as reinforced as some other ski-specific pants. There's a double layer of fabric on the lower 12" or so, but not the sort of "armor" material that some pants have. If you tend to catch your pants with your edges a lot you might tear them up after a while. I don't usually have issues with this, but just something to be aware of with Arc'Teryx softshell pants.
I wanted a pant that could do everything from resort and back country skiing to snowshoeing and everything in between. It's really light, packs small, uber breathable, the waist is easily adjustable in gloves, and is far and away the most comfortable and flexible pants I own, well next to my track pants. I have been skiing in these twice where it dropped 6 inches while I was skiing and was dry as a bone both times. I'm 5-10 165 and wear a 32 X 32 pant and the medium fits perfectly. Also It was made in Canada so you know it's good.
